The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump' first attack video is out.

They're attacking Harris for... promising and expansion of health care and repealing tax-cuts during a pandemic.

Are they at least claiming that those things are BAD because something something socialism, or have they completely given up and are just presenting those things with no context?

The GOP are effectively 4chan now.

They are so much in their echo chamber they don't know that anyone who isn't already deep in their rhetoric finds their statements...insane.

Is it wrong to say the right is in full Good Is Bad And Bad Is Good mode?

If you aproach it thinking about the same way yes, but the reality is there is an entirely diffrent line of thought when you come from the right

Apparently far-right mouthpieces like Ben Shapiro are now screaming about how Kamala Harris is a radical leftist.

[up][up]Rationalinsanity’s post[1] a couple pages back is a good starting point if you want to learn about who Harris is and her history.

[up] While other far-right mouthpieces on twitter who masquerade as leftists are presumably screening that she’s a white supremacist?

Kamala Harris in short:

She's a former California Prosecutor of the George W. Bush era who was twice as hard on crime to get half the respect. However, her tough on crime and harshness managed to get her to the United States Senate in the Democratic Party. Leftists like me have never much cared for her because 'Tough on Crime' feels like it only makes the world worse.

However, she's a canny political operator and pro busing for schools along with other programs to improve life for black Americans.

It’s actually not clear if she’s pro-bussing in modern times, she waffled on that and its part of why her attack on Biden over bussing pissed some people off.

If I'm not mistaken, a not-insignificant-portion of GOP voters - particularly the more Libertarian-leaning ones - basically believe that all government is out to screw everyone over for the sake of calculating Machiavellian self-interest (or, rather, the Flanderized theme park version of Machiavellianism), and any government that claims otherwise is just trying to deceive you. Therefore, the party that doesn't make 'idealistic promises' is better because at least they're honest about trying to screw you over - or, more likely, trying to screw over some other group that isn't you - the moment you're in their crosshairs, then suddenly they're evil and need to be fought. :V

Shapiro attacking someone should be considered a badge of honor.

And anyone who listens to him isn't going to vote for the Democratic ticket anyway. His audience is right-wing and far-right asshats who are stupid enough to believe he's intelligent.

Someone I know isn't going to be happy. He really wanted someone from the Midwest- this would probably come across to him as "the coasts deciding what's best for the rest of the country". I don't agree with that line of thinking, but that's probably what he's going to say.

Harris is what I'd personally call broadly progressive, and somewhere in the arithmetic mean of the Democratic party with regards to ideology. By which I mean she's flanked to her right by the "centrist" wing, aka center-leftists like Biden and Pelosi, and flanked to her left by the "progressive" wing, i.e. more radical types such as Sanders, Warren, Pramila Jayapal, and The Squad. On all issues for which there is a large body of support, she can be trusted to at least not act against the pro-choice, pro-gun control, pro-labor, and pro-welfare lobby.

She's on the left side of mainstream thought while remaining within the safe zone of the left half of the Overton Window, although she may hold views that those of us on the farther left side including social democrats and the less accelerationist democratic socialists find potentially disagreeable, and to us may be a big deal, but to mainstream and low-to-moderate information voters, matters of pedantry.

My biggest issue with Harris (and this is not an insignificant one) is her aggressive pushing of SESTA-FOSTA, which isn't openly anti-queer, but being a form of legislation motivated by Moral Guardians, has primarily been used to discriminate heavily against queer people, sex workers, and such marginalized groups, without actually making it easier for the people it claims to be protecting to seek help.

[up][up]Whitmer didn't want to leave her current position (between the pandemic and only being in office since 2018), and was seen as too moderate by many, and Klobuchar (whose name is loathed by auto-correcttongue) was dead in the water the moment the latest BLM protests took off, initially centered on the PD she was once responsible for.

Who else did he want?

Tammy Duckworth.

Whitmer actually flew to Delaware to meet with Biden just a couple of days ago, so I can imagine a number of her fans got their hopes up.

So there is already speculation who will replace Harris in the Senate if Biden wins. Newsom (the current governor who would have to appoint a new Senator) has stated that he won't do anything unless and until Biden wins.

A record number of people are giving up their US citizenship, according to new research.

Has this been shown before?

Now, I'm really worried about the State(no pun intended) of the USA.

Where would they even go?
