Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of course it'll stick around in some form. Like the earth isn't just going to open up and drag Trump into hell if he loses.
But the the thing about cults of personality is that they typically start fizzling if the core personality is disgraced. And the thing about 'strongman' politicians is that a single loss tends to ruin their reputations.
Depends if McConnell and co can get control of the party back properly. Trump is a useful idiot to them because he'll pass anything. What they do not want is a bunch of Trumpist idiots and Qanon believers to become a significant enough elected bloc that they can't source an equally useless replacement.
If they can field candidates who keep their base excited and angry at the enemy then it's great for them, but if they lose control it will probably eat itself at this point. Alienating too many people.
The Republican Party is making plans to harass "monitor" voters this year. AP News
In June, the Republican National Committee sued to ease those rules, saying they imposed arbitrary limits on the party's ability to keep tabs on the voting process no matter where it occurs.
The Pennsylvania lawsuit over an obscure slice of election law is just one piece of the party's sweeping plan to expand poll monitoring this election year. Thanks to a federal court ruling that freed the party from restrictions - a result of tactics found to be aimed at minority voters - the GOP is mounting a broad effort to keep a close watch on who casts ballots.
Republicans say they are focused on preventing the fraud they have long maintained, without evidence, is rampant in U.S. elections. Democrats and voting rights groups fear the planned influx of poll watchers under the imprimatur of the RNC is a veiled effort to suppress Democratic turnout, particularly in minority communities.
They'd better not pull that "monitoring" BS at my polling place. That said, I'll be voting by mail as long as there's a reasonable chance of it getting through and being counted.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, well, I'm good then. It's pretty pale. I really wish I didn't have to make that distinction.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm hoping to vote by mail, but my state still doesn't have no-excuse absentees nor allows COVID-19 to be used as an excuse...
My musician pageTrump wants to be the fifth head on Mount Rushmore.
He even tweeted a picture of him superimposed over the mountainside.
And he totally did not discuss this with the South Dakota governor! Fake news! So you know he definitely did bring it up, and the answer hurt his feelings.
And it gets better. Governor Noem (of South Dakota) leaned into Trump's dreams by presenting him with a Mount Rusmore replica with his head added to it.
As an aside, there is apparently no more room on Mt. Rushmore for more heads, so any ambitious presidents would need to look for another mountain to carve up. Which, again, Noem suggested, so there you go.
I wonder if that is possible. Can you buy a chunk of mountain and carve your likeness into it?

You can buy the land the mountain is one but carving on the mountain would probably require planning permission and a lot of cash

have a listen and have a link to my discord server

Most likely, a bunch of Republicans are going to denounce Trump and lie that they never really supported him, and then change absolutely nothing about their behavior or practices.
