Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Septimus: I admit to feeling that the whole "Trump's base can see him make an ass of himself" strategy is clearly not going to scrape any further members of his base off the bottom of the barrel, but if we're lucky we'll get some good quips from Biden. The biggest thing we need to combat right now is the whole "Biden is senile" falsehood bothsiders and thumb-sitters are eating up.
It's been fun.Any debates between these two would be such a circus. Trump has nothing substantive to say about anything, so I don't even see how they would qualify as debates. Back in 2016 there were still people pretending that Trump could somehow be "presidential".
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I too have no interest in seeing any debates this time around, especially not during a pandemic. Frankly, they're an antiquated concept anyway. They were useful when radio was a thing and even moreso when television debuted, but nowadays with the internet, it's not hard to get info on your candidate of choice and what they stand for.
Plus, let's be honest, as Fighteer said, there's no way these debates would be civil anyway, so it's doubtful we'd even get any meaningful info out of them. Debates may have been useful when both candidates at least maintained a semblance of civility, but that's obviously not going to happen this time.
Debates aren't for people who pay attention to politics. They'll have already made up their minds well before the debates come around. Debates are for the fence-sitters and uninformed, and having Biden and Trump on the same stage to directly contrast each other could certainly turn an entire bank of halogen spotlights on the difference between them.
Trump was able to get away with a lot in his debates with Hillary that he wouldn't be able to against Biden simply because Hillary was more constrained in how she could respond to him by needing to walk the fine line of being a woman in public and having to largely smile and take it.
It didn't help that the moderators almost exclusively asked questions about scandals and never gave Hillary the chance to talk about meaningful policy issues, which were her strongest aspects.
Apparently, nobody wanted to hear about her plan for reforming the tax code or dealing with climate change; they wanted to hear her try to justify her vote for the Iraq war. Because harping on people's pasts is great TV drama. Heck, look how much we do it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I mean, debate can also see how a candidate actually present itself with others, so it can be use for that.
And...im the only one who see trump stumble is way in the debate? even his fierce suporter said he act like old fool, because he cant do anything beyond 20 minutes.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"It might be fun to see him storm off the stage in response to a tough question or statement, but it would be a mistake to count on that happening. He agreed to debate Hillary Clinton mainly because of his contempt for women: he thought he could intimidate her into looking weak.
That is how he attacks people: personally, not on substance. So expect his main approach to Biden to be attacking him for his supposed senility, his speech impediment, or his supposed lack of intelligence.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"More general news, but it seems there was a major gas explosion in Baltimore this morning, according to AJC
The explosions were in the Reisterstown Station neighborhood in northwest Baltimore.
I expect that Burisma will come up a lot. Trump is likely going to make that his main attack point. Perhaps he will go into Tara Reade's accusations as well.
I think much will depend on how Biden reacts to that, and whether he can avoid being pushed into the defensive.
