The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Part of me wishes that we had an... oligarchy... or whatever, where only the best possible candidates are picked and vetted in my a ruling few. We'd have less of this idiotic appeal to popular vote stuff and all the shenannigans that gets lassoed in with it. ...right?

Of course, we'd have an entirely seperate set of problems, like, being under a Ruling Class Of Some Flavor...

They wouldn't do that. They'd just pick whichever candidates serve their own personal interests, much like the wealthy corporate elite do now in each election with their money.

Well, yes - my last sentence pretty much says just that. So the debates would merely be of higher-caliber stuff that the layperson would barely understood, if they even cared to pay attention to it.

...it could be argued that the average layperson barely gets it now, though.

@ Pvt. You mean an elitist system?

I, of course, favour a techoncracy (a government run by experts).

...do I hear anyone for making sure education is adequate enough and not such a large gap between good and bad schools that the average layperson CAN understand it, or am I just a naive little dreamer?

Education is a very low topic for conservatives.

[up] Yeah, it usually comes up on the chopping block pretty quickly when it comes to budget cuts.

That assumes Education is a topic for conservatives.

Why do conservatives (although, the American usage of the term disgraces the word itself) hate education?

Because the educated "elites" vote against them.

Has America always been so anti-intellectual?

Well, the "official" reason is that education is a privilege not a right.

[up] Pretty much, yeah?

As the religious right increased its influence, as well as hate for Evolution and facts, anti-intellectualism has gone up.

On the other hand, we could be on a pendelum. Anti-intellectualism used to be MUCH worse during the period before the 70s.

Yeah, well. I wasn't necessarily talking about what conservatives will agree to, so much as an alternative to rolling back Democracy here. tongue

[up][up] Seriously. Free pubic education up through the end of high school is mandatory, it's a right. The only thing that apparently isn't is the quality of that education.

@ Tho. Conservatives generally are progressive, actually. They believe in small measured changes, trying not to overturn the previous structures if they work.

Basically, leave shit alone, and do small measured changes.

What your 'conservatives' are, are Reggresionists.

I think regressionist is the right word.

Something based on 'regression' is what the word is. You guys can make it up, IDGAF.
