Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That and the administration's preference for what are essentially 'accurate, surgical strikes' with use of the military helps. "Get in, get the job done, get out", and a tendency to ask permission before doing things. It shows that you respect others' sovereignty.
That and no matter how well intentioned Bush was, Iraq and Afghanistan reeked of veiled forms of Imperialism and White Man's Burden.
If Biden at the debates was a cranky old man, what was Eastwood at the RNC?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.![]()
Ryan's had ample opportunity for months to give facts and or opinions. Instead we just get smug contempt for the common man's ability to understand how he can somehow derived a revenue neutral budget from claims every economic expert in the world says cant possibly work outside of unicorns and rainbows.
But thewn. Liberals are evil, so no matter what we do, we're the villain.

Do you have another source, then, that bothered to try and measure how bad that was? Democrat or Republican, that was obnoxious. Romney was annoying too, but not nearly to that degree. Ultimately I feel that it made Biden look over-defensive and sound less credible.

You'd be surprised by how many people in other countries like Obama due to him being perceived as a "cool dude." At least anecdotally, if you go to a place like imgur and see a picture of Obama doing something like playing with a lightsaber or reading kids a story, you get one comment that's like "Man I can't wait for him to be out of office" followed by a slew of "..... then we'll take him over here in <country>" and "no dude, we totally called dibs first over here in <other country>" etc.
You'd also be surprised by how many people in other countries will flat out state they don't like him because he's black. The honesty is actually kind of refreshing instead of having to pick it out from some subtle sneer or whatever.
The point is, image is important.

If I'm reading this right, he's saying evolution can't count as science because it's non-provable? ... Ugh... why do Republican representatives this cycle insist on turning into living strawmen...?
Thank God that classic debating practices still apply, even outside Parliament, in the main.
Heck: facts are important. It's good when most of the time it's about differences in interpretation from various sources, rather than how screwed up the numbers you're pulling from the air are.

I'm beginning to see how people are still supporting Romney and Ryan despite the fact that they keep lying. I just had a lengthy Facebook conversation with some family acquaintances, one of whom said Obama put us into debt and then tripled that debt. No matter how much math I used, no matter how many times I explained that the debt hasn't even doubled since Obama took office, she insisted I was being intolerant of the opinions of others and blaming Bush for everything. And this was a woman with about twenty or thirty years more life experience than me, who kept insisting I was too young to understand and not old enough to remember Bush. (I'm 20).
It's no wonder people don't care that Romney and Ryan are liars. They believe all the crap that comes out of their mouths.

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.![]()
Kee[p in mind she probably also had no idea how to do the economic math herself. Which makes it even more aggravating.
In short, theres a large quantity of people who the idea that Romney was confident and poised and Biden was a rude and cocky bastard are exactly what they saw because they cannot fathom a world where Romney was lying his ass off but damned good at looking poised even when not, or who actually doesnt notice how similar Biden acted to Romnbey (y'now. except with moar facts)

Looks like a lot of political analysts are focusing on Biden's smiling rather than Ryan's Lying.
And here's a terrible question asked at the debate.
Medicare and SS are not going broke. In about a decade's time, they're going to have to have extra funds allocated to their respective funds, but those funds will still pay out well over 70% of what they need to.

@Euo:
When even a majority of British Conservatives at their Conference prefer Obama to Romney
(see the video). They might agree with his fiscal Policy, but disagree when it comes to Social Policies and a feeling that Romney's too gaff-prone to support.
