The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

We spend more on our military than the next nine nations combined. I think we can afford to cut some military spending without worrying about someone attacking us.

While I agree with this, it's important to remember that we also get a fraction of the bang for our buck that many countries get, so you can't compare the spending directly. For example, a lot of our money is spent on technology that keeps us from killing civilians rather than helping us kill our enemies, and our soldiers are much better taken care of than pure military utility requires.

I'm starting to think it's safe to call the media that isn't MSNBC Conservative at this point.

The media is always going to tend to support the underdog. It's in their interests to keep a lot of controversy flowing for them to report on.

CNN always struck me as being firmly entrenched in the cult of centrism. They're not in favor of any one side but they do that by not calling out either side on their bullshit.

That's one reason I like CNN, because I consider myself competent to detect the BS myself and the endless propaganda of other places is just intellectually and spiritually tiring.

I do see a point to leaving troops through the winter. leaving em until spring 2015 could be useful.

Fox is conservative, MSNBC is liberal, CNN is actually Fair and Balanced, nobody else really matters. Oh, and PBS is public.

The media that aren't MSNBC are agreeing with Ryan, that means Conservative in my book. It's one thing for the whole "anti-Incumbent" fever,...and this stuff is another.

Holy crap,it seems now Ryan is the smug, smiley one and Biden is pissed off. Uh-oh

Paul Ryan was underestimating the danger of the east.

CNN isn't balanced. It's just a big old appeal to the middle fallacy.

They would have flat Earthers on their show if there were enough idiots who believed it.

Oh god, Biden just said that Syria was 5 times larger than Libya geographically.

I'm rather amazed that Ryan didn't call him out for that gaff.

True, but Biden used it as major reason why the situation in Syria is different from the one in Libya.
