The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If things stay where they are, it will be 2000 all over again, only this time it will be the democrats suing to stop recounts.
This is one of the relatively few things that would make me instantly lose all respect for Obama. Losing the popular vote and winning the election is one thing; that's a quirk of the system and I can't really blame anyone (Democrat or Republican) for targeting their efforts to fit the system.

Suing to stop counting votes, though, is pure unadulterated bullshit, and always will be. No matter who's doing it.

I'm not even sure he's gonna keep the electoral edge, between that Ohio thing going on,Pennsylvania now a "leaning" and not Solid,Colorado,Florida, and Virginia pretty much on a tie after being "leaners"

Unless Romney really gaffes up,it's gonna pretty much be 1980 again.

Call me an optimist, but I'm not worried just yet. Still, I am amazed at just how much of an impact the debate had.

Well, Obama did look really tired. I still can't believe they made him do that crap on his anniversary. Still, you'd think the fact that everything Romney said was a lie would turn people off, but apparently since Obama didn't call him out on it (again, because he was tired of doing that exact thing), that makes it true.

Anyway, when are the debates tonight?

Another pair of gag definitions:

Liberal: n. someone whose first question when stuff goes wrong is "where did I go wrong".

Conservative: n. someone whose first question when stuff goes wrong is "where did you go wrong",

As humorous as this may or may not be, it doesn't hold up as well as the other set when put under any sort of scrutiny... After all, I don't remember any liberals asking people how they*

screwed up when the economy collapsed in 2008...

I don't expect these gag definitions to be at all accurate; they're just meant to be jokes.

Slate described Romney as the alpha, which is on-target. When did he suddenly get so flashy?

His son, Tagg Romney, is supposedly behind the new direction he's taken.

We had the Romney 47% video give Obama a huge lead, then we had a relatively good debate showing from Romney, and that lead's evaporated. Rather than predicting who's gonna win or who's gonna lose, I'm gonna predict the polls will see-saw back and forth several more times before election day.

VP Debates? I should stay away from this thread until they're done so I don't have to worry about how Biden put his balls on the podium.

@Radical Taoist

I think that's overly sensationalist way to put it. I've vaguely heard of some kind of rumor like that for a while and it's been bothering me. I'm glad it's been shown to be false though.

Republicans abandon lawmaker over rape comment.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan and other Republican leaders abandoned support for state Rep. Roger Rivard on Thursday after he spoke publically about advice his father gave him that “some girls rape easy.”

Turned on fox news for the hell of it. I was screaming at the TV inside of 10 seconds.

Fox- "now, is Obama going to far by calling Mitt Romney a Liar?"

Me- "HE FUCKING IS A LIAR!!!"

Do not fuck this up Biden. And actually calling Ryan on his shit would be nice to.

Of course I guess you can win debates by lying and looking energetic while you do it... so I guess facts don't matter much.

Perhaps more importantly, it's another good example of Fox's hypocrisy - Romney called Obama a liar right in the middle of the debate, after all.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.
