Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think one of the various pretexts used for the impeachment of Andrew Johnson was actually an implication that he'd somehow been involved in Lincoln's assassination.
Also, the guy who attempted to assassinate Theodore Roosevelt in 1912 did so in part because he believed that T.R. orchestrated the assassination of William McKinley.
Conspiracy theories are more about the person doing the theorizing than they are about external reality. This is why they can sometimes seem to have no basis in truth whatsoever and yet people still believe them.

Maybe take some deep breaths.

They should have sent a poet.
Ah, I see.
(Well, that's what happens when a bunch of people sitting in front of the computer, uses the same account to post and participate in a debate.)
It's still fair to have some sense of alarm and concern though in these matters, as remaining only positive isn't a good standpoint to hold either.
That said, I will not dive deeper into this one.

I'm not going to get the question of the date for the final selection of the democrat candidate answered, am I?
Yeah it just sounds like you’re trying to bait other people to do the doomsaying for you.
Edit: The candidate is officially selected at the convention (13-16 July 2020) but it’s likely that it becomes clear who they are well before that point.

I see. Thanks for that.

Since this is the politics thread, are there any other news that have arrived today regarding this topic or does the news flow slow down during the weekends? It feels as such, for some reason...
Well, the Supreme Court term begins soon
and sure enough there are a lot of scary things on the plate:
- Whether states can abolish the insanity defense.
- Whether Title VII of the Civil Rights Act applies to LGBT people.
- Whether the Appointments Clause applies to US territories. If it does, this would allow Trump and the scum in the Senate to appoint the mayor of Washington DC and governors in Puerto Rico etc.
- Whether states can prosecute immigrants who use false Social Security numbers.
- Whether life in prison can be applied to juveniles.
- Whether Trump can unilaterally rescind DACA.
- Whether federal law enforcement is allowed to damage people w/o any possibility to claim damages in return.
- Whether claims of racial discrimination require proof of blatant racism.
- Whether the 2nd amendment mandates that public carry of weapons be allowed.
- Whether states that subsidize private schools also need to subsidize parochial schools.
Plus an abortion case which IMO deserves far less attention than it receives.

I forgot the most important thing.
In less than a week, Louisiana holds the first round of its gubernatorial election. The Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards has a chance to clinch the election on the first round, if he gets 50%+1 the whole election is decided. More information here
.
Later, in a month Kentucky has its gubernatorial election. That race is a bit more of a tossup but the incumbent Republican Matt Bevin is a piece of work. More information here
.
Scoop: Trump pins Ukraine call on Energy Secretary Rick Perry – Trump told House Republicans that Perry convinced him to phone Zelensky.
Behind the scenes: Trump made these comments during a conference call with House members on Friday, according to 3 sources on the call.
Per the sources, Trump rattled off the same things he has been saying publicly — that his call with Zelensky was "perfect"and he did nothing wrong. But he then threw Perry into the mix and said something to the effect of: "Not a lot of people know this but, I didn't even want to make the call. The only reason I made the call was because Rick asked me to. Something about an LNG [liquefied natural gas] plant," one source said, recalling the president's comments. 2 other sources confirmed the first source's recollection.
Perry is already on his way out
.
He is legitimately linked to the Impeachment inquiry, but this does come off as Trump trying to scapegoat. A later part of the the Axios article notes that the White House acknowledged the conference call where Trump made those claims but the readout they released about it made no mention of Perry.

Apparently there's now a second whistleblower
, also from the intelligence community. Who knows, maybe more will step up.
Former Trump orgnization exce believes Trump could resign.
She believes that Trump would likely resign to save face rather than face impeachment. I could sorta see that happen, but I also doubt it would go that way since resigning would mean Trump looks weak.

But Donald Trump is a highly unstable individual and not shy from escalating his attacks if his usual methods goes blunt and loses their bites.
I just want to be prepared in case he does something that might never be able to become undone in anyone's lifetime.
(I hope he's too cowardly and sane enough to not launch a nuke or anything like that, even considering his eagerness to launch them for any reason whatsoever, like against hurricanes...)
But considering that the guy believes that he himself is America and put himself first in any case...let's say that the presidency will never be the same as it once was once he's finally gone.
(hopefully karma comes back to bite him hard through the choices of lifestyle he has made across his life, such as only living on fast-food out of fear for poisoning, or not exercising even on standard levels of human activity...)
It's safe to say that he has not provided a single positive thing to the american people so far, and it has been three years already...
Hold on.
When exactly is it that the main democratic candidate for the 2020 election will be decided again?
