The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Isn't it pretty darn hypocritical to tell fellow women to stay in the kitchen while being activists themselves?

Conservatives love giving a platform to internalized categorists. If you're a dude who makes videos on the internet saying that feminists are evil bitches and women should stay in the kitchen, you might get an audience. Maybe.

But if you're a woman making those videos, the Right will go out of their way to prop you up and parade you around at every event. "This WOMAN with her WOMAN PARTS hates feminists, and because a WOMAN is saying it, that proves that feminism really is evil and bad all along!"

Same reason every racist Conservative likes to have a black guy on hand to talk about how black people are the worst race ever. Same reason homophobic churches love trotting out "Ex-Gays" to preach about the importance of resisting "sinful urges". Getting an internalized categorist on the team adds a sense of legitimacy to the hate.

Note that some of these people really are hateful assholes. Others, it's been noticed, can smell where the money's coming from. Omarosa Manigault made some serious cash by being a mouthpiece for Trump. He's suddenly a racist asshole now that she's been booted from the White House, but he was a cool dude who just wants good things for America when she was collecting a paycheck from him.

Also these Conservatives seem to have the Po V that since they are part of the 'elite' and 'specials' (since they are being courted and presented all over the place) the 'rules' don't apply to them. It's what makes Serena's story in The Handmaid's Tale a huge case of "Careful what you Wish For" She long advocated for 'Stay in the Kitchen' as the proper path for women and once that happened she was downright shocked that those rules now applied to HER, she no longer had a high flying career no longer a place at her husband's side making decisions to run the country, she was 'a woman' nothing more.

Nickleback copyright struck Trump's video using the "Look At This Photograph" meme with a photo of Biden and Devon Archer.

Reminds me of when his campaign was hit with a lawsuit for using the Game of Thrones font and "Winter is Coming" meme.

Here’s a thought, if Trump makes one of his calls for interference (which is a felony) via Twitter (he may have already) could Twitter be charged as an accessory to the crime if they leave the tweet up?

I think Twitter, and most other platforms of this type, have some legalese in their user agreements stating that they hold no responsibility for things people post using their service.

I'm not sure "the law doesn't apply to us" would hold up in court.

Especially if they had ample opportunity to silence Trump.

If it doesn't, then they'll just appeal the ruling until it reaches the Conservative-led Supreme Court.

Except that doesn’t work, otherwise they wouldn’t remove copyrighted music would they? Because they’d face no legal issues from leaving it up.

That’s the real madness of Twitter’s leadership, they’ll stop Trump from sharing music he doesn’t own via twitter, but they won’t stop him committing felonies via twitter.

To say that a media platform has no legal responsibility for letting this users use it to commit crimes would open up huge floodgates, not just piracy, but also much worse stuff.

Not every user is the president though,it's simply because he happens to be the president that he can't be charged with any sort of crime,so there really is one law for him and one law for the average person to follow

Trump could literally rob a bank and not be arrested until he leaves office.

This counter-weighs the fact that in theory, a President could be impeached because Congress doesn't like his stupid hair. The Founding Fathers didn't really think there needed to be more checks on his power than "The Legislative branch can literally have him removed from office at any time for any reason whatsoever." And yet, here we are.

Trump doesn’t have to be charged for others to be charged for playing a role in his crime.

We have a literal precedent off someone being charged and convicted with breaking election law for acting for Trump, with Trump going uncharged.

If Trump tweeted out child porn and Twitter left it up Twitter would almost certainly face serious legal issues, I’m wondering if they’d face the same legal issues if Trump used twitter to commit others crimes and they left his tweets up.

They’re already refusing to aid him in breaking copyright law.

I’m not talking about Trump being charged with a crime, I’m talking about Twitter being charged with a crime the same way they would be if they let people upload child porn onto twitter.

Our whole political system really wasn't meant for such massive portions of Congress and really the general population acting in bad faith this aggressively and in such a coordinated manner.

Oh really when?

It's almost as if a group of C18th political philosophers drew a set of guidelines up using Rational Actor as their model of human behaviour. And, that that core framework hasn't been tweaked much since.

We're also dealing with the compromises they made to get people who believed in a God-given right to enslave black people on board with the whole thing.

Quite a few of them didn't believe in that either. The USA was a compromise of people who arguably never should have been one nation in the first place.

Well, that's kind of the problem, then and now. We didn't agree on where we were going or even that we were one country, but we had to live together, and "every state does its own thing" wasn't working.

To add bring levity to the thread, lying liar who lies/right-wing muckraker Jacob Wohl has a new target in Elizabeth Warren. He's claiming that she was involved in an extended sexual relationship with a 24-year-old former Marine Bodybuilder.

Yes, he's actually claiming this and it's not a satire/spoof article [lol]

The most amazing thing about this is that it literally doesn't hurt her either way, either 1) everyone recognizes that he's a known liar and this is ridiculous or 2) her support increases because she's apparently an absolute Chad.

I don't know too much about Warren's husband, but I have been told by a source I trust (to not lie to me, if not 100% to be always right) that if someone rocks up to Professor Mann and tries to get his reaction, he's liable to troll the fuck out of them and just go 'Oh, did she? Good for her!'

[up]x3 So she was in a consensual relationship with one other man in her life (if the ~~lie~~story is to be believed)? I hope at least she didn't pay for it, then have to get her lawyer to pay him illegally to cover it up.

Seriously, when compared to Donald "Playboy" (more like Payboy) Trump, this story is a literal nothingburger.

The FEC Chairwoman, Ellen Weintraub, posted for the first time ever on Twitter, warning President Trump that his repeated demand that Foreign Countries investigate his primary Rival, Joe Biden, violates Election law. If he continues to break election law, the FEC may have to ban Trump from official ballots. In other words, Trump may be banned from running in 2020, not because he's been impeached, but because he's violating election law. He also wouldn't be a valid write-in name either (similar to Mickey Mouse or that Gorilla that died in 2016).

So now I hope Trump keeps running his big mouth so he'll be ineligible to run for office in 2020.

From that Newsweek article on the attempt to smear Warren:

"Jacob Wohl is is this curious combination of utter vileness tempered by hilarious incompetence and stupidity"

...Yeah, that pretty much matches how I feel about this. While I find the incompetence amusing as well, I'm also utterly disgusted by the sheer vileness of this blatant smear job. It's in the same spirit as birtherism and Pizzagate. I also think this is only a harbinger of worse to come. It's really going to ramp up after the primaries are finished.
