Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Didn't Shigeru Miyamoto say something to the effect that Bowser is only a villain "on stage"? Whereas for Trump it isn't a stage persona at all.
(with apologies for continuing the derail)
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.As per usual, comparing Trump to anyone tends to end up being an Insult to Rocks.
We learn from history that we do not learn from historyIf Trump is to be compared to anything and not be an insult to what he's compared to, it should be a "Killer Klown".
They even got a fitting theme song for him as well. (Want to hear it, look it up on youtube, since I'm not sure it's okay to link to it here myself.)
A little off topic but this thread is the best place I can think of to ask this question.
I got a text from my (much more conservative) brother asking me to watch a video titled "Camp America, Kitty Werthmann Speech". I want to do him the courtesy of actually watching, but my mind is stuck in "consider the source" and the source is a conservative, Second Amendment supporting older brother. Because of that, I'm already not about to watch that video until I can do so in an incognito tab to avoid affecting recommendations even a little.
But I wanted to ask if anyone here knew who Kitty Werthmann was, so I can get an idea of what I'm going into. I found a Snopes page that I'll read as time allows
, but from what I've seen there and the fact that most of the results when I looked up her name seemed very right wing, I'm thinking this is someone who treats the Socialist in the Nazi party's name more literally than it should be.
Does that seem accurate?

A short search has found a Rational Wiki
article on her, which if it's even slightly accurate suggests that she's an awful hack. She seems like a reactionary pretending that the reactionaries of the Nazis rose to power because liberals and leftists dared to
change traditional social values and structures.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMore or less. She also blames Hitler's rise to power on things like gun control and equal rights for women. She's the current president of a group founded by the late Phyllis Schafly — and if you know anything about Schafly...

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
Yeah, reading the snope's article
her message is hilariously dishonest.
Hitler didn't give equal rights to women, the Nazis were virulently misogynistic.
She just wants to push policy that they would find agreeable while pretending that her opponents want to bring Nazism, just standard far-right projection.
Right-wing anti-feminist leader who played a key role in blocking the Equal Rights Amendment. She made a career out of saying that women should stay in the kitchen.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAnd also her son is the one who founded Conservapedia. If you've ever read up on the guy and wondered 'how does someone end up like that?', the answer is having her for a mother.
Angry gets shit done. Thanks for all your answers guys. It's good to know what I'm likely to see on this matter. Weirdly, it's almost a relief. I didn't get a chance to do more than skim the Snopes article on Werthmann before my work break ended and it almost sounded like she was praising the Nazis, which sounded so off to me given that my brother's like, why he likely sent me this, and the fact he's the one I credit for teaching me about tolerance as a kid, I was starting to wonder if I needed to seriously reevaluate the people in my life. Knowing it's likely "Gun Control Bad!!!!!" and "Obamacare Bad!!!!!" is much more in line with expectation.
On a more on topic and related note, has anyone ever tried framing criticisms of Trump in how his actions have hurt the Republican agenda?
For example, iirc the Republicans might have had a much easier time getting rid of the ACA is Trump hadn't insisted Republicans could replace it with something better, which they proved incapable of doing. Or how he made himself an easy scapegoat how the government shutdown after his response to it on live TV was basically Bring It?
If so, has that had any success where other arguments failed?

So speaking of Trump and China, he openly called for China to investigate Joe and Hunter Biden this morning
.
"China should start an investigation into the Bidens because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine," Trump told reporters outside the White House.
While Trump said he hasn't requested Chinese President Xi Jinping investigate the Bidens, the public call mirrors the private behavior on which Democrats are partially basing their impeachment inquiry — using the office of the presidency to press a foreign leader to investigate a political rival.
It is "certainly something we can start thinking about, because I’m sure that President Xi does not like being on that kind of scrutiny, where billions of dollars is taken out of his country by a guy that just got kicked out of the Navy," Trump said Thursday of asking China to probe the Bidens. "He got kicked out of the Navy, all of the sudden he’s getting billions of dollars. You know what they call that? They call that a payoff."
Just... is this still even Refuge in Audacity, or has it managed to cross the line a third time so that it lands in plain "Wrong" instead?

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I suspect that such an argument would not likely be very effective as Trump has not been that much of a hinderance to their agenda:
- He did sign the tax reform bill and he did appoint conservative judges.
- While he did hurt the Obamacare repeal efforts, it probably didn't make a difference at the end as "repeal and replace" was never a feasible policy.
- He probably did help his party in the Senate elections of 2018, even if he was harmful to their House prospects.
- Away from the fireworks, his government has been carrying out a typical conservative agenda.

Bowser rarely abuses his minions, something Trump does as much as he tweets.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
