The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I apologize if this question has been asked, but can someone give me a brief rundown of Warren's foreign policy perspective? I see a great deal of information on domestic policy programs (which is good), but very little on foreign policy.

EDIT: Pagetopper, again. At least with some context this time.

I know that she wants to end the use of ambassadorships as rewards for campaign contributors, likewise she wants a big push to rebuilt the State Department so as to undo some of the damage Trump has done to it, on top of that I believe she has pushed for more election security measures and action in relation to Russia.

Yeah, there’s really no way out of Afghanistan now.

Her other big foreign policy planks are pulling away from Saudi Arabia, condemnation of China, and a return to the Iran deal. IIRC, she also supports a two-state solution in Israel.

It’s pretty standard party-line Democrat stuff.

Aside from the Afghanistan withdrawal, and her novel ambassadorship proposal, most of her stances are things I've already long come to agree with as commonsense moves. Probably not much to write home about, but nothing to really disapprove of either.

I say do the opposite. Massive spending on building Afghanistan infrastructure. Marshall Plan style.

New York Times reported that Trump wanted the border wall to have spikes that can pierce flesh, electrify the wall, and surround the wall with a moat filled with snakes and gators.

You could not make this shit up even if you tried to. Trevor Noah is of course having fun with this.

Did he also want sharks with lasers on their heads?

I'm just surprised Trump didn't suggest following Vlad Tepes' example.

[up]x3 Marshall Plan won't work without the troops to keep it enforced. The same way it wouldn't have worked in Europe without US forces making sure that Soviet misadventures and Red Terrorists wouldn't get very far.

Without boots on the ground, all it would do is piss money away for no outcomes.

@M84

Trump also wanted to completely shut down the U.S./Mexico border as well as shoot immigrants in the legs so they can't cross over.

The moat thing may actually be connected to a different strait of Trump’s racism, see Obama once made a joke about the demands people make over the border (they want a bigger fence, then they want an even bigger fence) that ended with “then they’re gonna want a moat”.

This could be enough spite Obama move.

No no no, you need to fill the moat with fire, and then use fireproof gators.

He denied it, of course, saying he's tough on crime but not THAT tough.

Suuuuure. When he laughed along with the crowd when someone suggested we shoot border crossers, it's pretty much impossible to believe him. He's just mad that it got leaked.

Last week for the better part of a day I was stuck sitting next to an old lady and a cop. The old lady and the cop spent most of their time alternating between complaining about how all the young people were voting liberal and how they were indoctrinated in college and how nothing makes sense anymore, and making racist and sexist comments about various politicians.

Browser is also unafraid to get hurt when aiming for what he wants.

Yeah, when you lose out to the Koopas in admirable traits, you're not a great person. Let alone villain.

Bowser is also pragmatic enough to put aside his blood feud with his most hated enemy when a more dangerous threat appears.
