Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This is a possibility, but I'm not sure how probable it is. I mean, things like Trump's anti-intellectualism and lack of a filter and clear bigotry are why they like him, if the Republican base was willing or able to support smart authoritarians then we wouldn't have Trump.
I'm not saying his replacement can't be dangerous, Trump's a moron and he's still highly dangerous, but I'm not an actually smart and competent authoritarian is in the card's for them.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe People's Republic of China is communist in name only, at this point they're just authoritarian state capitalist.
What's actually odd about his congratulations is that Trump has shown himself to be relentlessly hostile to China, it's a weird mixed message.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTrump's dislike of China is openly about how he don't likes threats to USA power.
Watch me destroying my countryTrump praising China when he's normally super aggressive to them comes across as part of the facade he puts on for his hardcore followers, publicly he'll condemn them, start a trade war with them and generally be uncooperative towards them, but privately he's probably the opposite, mostly for his own benefit mind you,it's only when he has to be president in public with everyone watching that he really lays into China
Ergo,he;s two faced about China because he make a lot of money out of them and he can't afford to alienate them
Well there's that or he praised China blindly because someone told him to

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverTrump literally wants to be Dr. Evil: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/01/us/politics/trump-border-wars.html
He wanted the border wall to be electrified, have spikes on top, a moat with alligators and snakes in it, and Border Patrol to shoot migrants in the legs.
At this point he's making promises like he did during the 2016 election, the thing is his promise of building a wall has hardly been achived yet so promising further things to go with wall just makes him sound like he's trying to feed their imagination, but without an actual wall like he promised it's empty promise, can't have one without the other so to speak
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverWall Street doesn't want her, but Silicon Valley is warming up to Warren
.
They like her sharpness and clarity in her policies. They can deal with higher or lower tax policies, they just want to go back to the days of knowing what the tax policy even is.
A lot of individual employees actually like Warren taking on their employers, especially the people who walked out at Google. The grassroots support within their companies is causing the higher ups to take notice and consider supporting her over Biden.
Do you think the Yang techbros (I hate that word, but it is astonishingly accurate at times) will fall back to Warren when their beloved billionaire buddy inevitably drops out? It would be very strange for them to flip to Sanders.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"538: Would Elizabeth Warren Or Bernie Sanders Move To The Center Against Trump?
This is an important question in the context of the Democratic primary. Some more centrist Democrats are worried that Sanders and Warren in particular are taking left-wing positions in the primary that will hurt them in the general election. So those Democrats might be reassured by the idea that these candidates would move right after the primary. Alternatively, some very liberal Democrats are worried that Harris and Warren aren’t truly committed to left-wing goals like Medicare-for-All. Is it likely that they would abandon their liberal stances after the primary?
If history is any indication, the Democratic candidates will move to the center, but not in the most obvious way. They won’t abandon core liberal policy stands. But they will both speak about themselves and their policy views in more moderate ways and choose a running mate aimed at appealing to voters who are not hardcore liberals.
So if Warren or (ugh) Sanders actually wins the nomination, they might pick a more moderate running mate to appease less leftist Democratic voters.
Also, it looks like the Ukraine scandal has resulted in Biden getting a lot more media coverage last week. More than the rest of the primary candidates combined.
The Media Mentioned Biden More Than All The 2020 Primary Candidates Combined Last Week
I don't think there's any relevant recent polling data on Yang supporters' second choice.

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
If Warren or Sanders win the nomination they will pretty much have to pick a running mate somewhat to their right just as Biden will have to pick somone to his left if he wins. Likewise Sanders or Biden will have to pick a woman and/or Po C while Warren will need a white male. Assuming that one of the current Big Three actually wins. Iowa and NH both have a habit of being wild cards.
Damn. I hope he recovers well, but this does highlight the other problem with Sanders as a candidate. I try to avoid ageism but the dude could easily die in office.
Hopefully he'll fully recover and still be up and kicking for awhile yet.
...
If God forbid something should happen to him, how do you think it'll be before right wing conspiracy theorists, hardcore Bernie Bros, online trolls, etc., start an Elizabeth Warren kill list with Bernie as the first victim?

Gotta agree. His entire brand is built on "asshole."
