Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Did I ever bring up how Yang thinks big tech CEOs would be more than happy to foot the bill for his "Freedom Dividend"? You know, 'cause we all know how generous big corporation owners are.
i'm tired, my friend"Intelligence chief Joseph Maguire testifies following Democrats' impeachment inquiry"
The whistleblower complaint has been released!
Well I'm not getting work done today lol

The most jarring information about the complaint is not what the whistleblower conveyed — it's that the Trump-appointed inspector general investigated the leads and found them "urgent" and credible. https://intelligence.house.gov/uploadedfiles/20190812_-_whistleblower_complaint_unclass.pdf
…
ALSO IMPORTANT: The whistleblower claims more than half a dozen officials corroborated details of the Ukraine episode and its handling by the White House. The IG could have interviewed any/all of them — as well as other witnesses the whistleblower I Ded — to verify the evidence.
Saving you a click
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverWho supports impeachment?
We now have 220 Democrats in the House who support impeachment or an impeachment inquiry. Not surprisingly, the number shot up significantly after the news on Tuesday.

It could happen, but only after public polling comes out that's strongly in favor of impeachment. They're not going to budge until they decide Trump's brand is toxic to them, and then it'll be a landslide as soon as someone cracks the seal.
Any by strongly, I mean "in the mid 70s or so" at least.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Do you guys think the impeachment inquiry will help or hurt Trump? I'm kind of afraid, a lot people seem to think this will help him win reelection because it will energize his base and make the Democrats look foolish or corrupt.
I wish we had wait until after 2020 to try something like this, we need absolutely everything to go right next year if we're going to get rid of Trump.
We are asking not to resume arguing pros/cons, and instead stick to news about impeachment, because the former led to endless circular arguing and overheated posts.
You can disagree with this call, but lay off on the snark. This was not a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Something about the Whistleblower complaint from What the Fuck Just Happened Today, emphasis mine:
The whistleblower complaint regarding Trump and his interactions with Ukraine has been declassified and released to the public. The full version of the complaint was released to Congress yesterday. The complaint was filed on Aug. 12, and it raises several issues that go beyond Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The House voted 421-0 to release the complaint. Two House members voted present and 10 did not vote.

Is this as significant as I think it is that it was near unanimous?
I didn't think the House vote to see the complaint was that significant. Republicans can want to maintain the House's authority without wanting to use that information against the president.
Beyond that I considered it a mix of not believing Trump did anything wrong/believing that even if he did there will be no consequences.
This signature was thumped to preserve the dignity of the moderators.Yep. Pretty much everyone wants it because they expect it to support their position. Whether that position is "This evidence PROVES that Trump abused his power," or "This evidence PROVES that Trump is innocent of all charges!"
It's hard to argue the facts when you aren't allowed to see the facts.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The exact same thing played out with the Mueller Report, if you remember - Republicans also wanted it released because they expected it to exonerate Trump.
I suspect this kind of "both sides endorsing the same action for opposite reasons" plays out more frequently than we think.
