Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And honestly, I agree with her.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangInteresting news: Sanders paid a visit to the Comanche nation in Oklahoma. In fact, he's the first presidential candidate since Theodore Roosevelt to do so.
“The pain, the lies, and the broken treaties that have fallen upon the American Indian people has got to end. It should have ended hundreds of years ago; it should have never happened,” Sanders said. “Our job is to end those sins, those terrible things, and bring our people together and treat our Native American people with the respect and dignity that God knows they are entitled to.”
Before the event, Sanders met with tribal citizens and discussed the epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women. At the Powwow, Sanders pledged to appoint an Attorney General that will work with Native communities to solve these murders and put an end to this crisis.
As president, Sanders would reverse Republican efforts to suppress voting rights in Native communities and Trump’s budget cuts to the Department of Interior, which oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Bureau of Indian Education and the Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians–instead providing resources to protect and revitalize indigenous languages, religions, cultures, and traditions. Sanders would also call for representation of Native peoples in the highest levels of government in Washington and expand protections for tribal lands.
Well it's good that someone is bringing attention to the plight of Native women on reservations. Time will tell if it will amount to any concrete action or changes. Hopefully one of the other candidates will also take up this banner, especially Warren given her apparent Native heritage.

It wasn't open. We only found out about it because Congress found out a whistleblower report about it was being squashed by the Justice Department, which is illegal in and of itself, and bits and pieces of what was happening were uncovered by journalists over the week.
But it is blatant extortion and attempted collusion, yes.

And then Trump just stupidly admitted to it when it all came out, essentially assuming that he is in a position where he can't be touched. Which given history, has borne out, but Pelosi's finally decided to pull that trigger, so we'll see what happens.
Personally, I think it's a bit late to eject him from office, but I'm hoping that the investigation basically tanks his popularity for the upcoming election.
I have absolutely no idea why you're assuming this.
Double post but this is worth it.
Trump reportedly reached out to Pelosi to make some kind of deal.
Clearly he's worried about this, which is a very encouraging sign.
Also, her response was absolutely golden:
Unanimous Senate vote to release whistleblower complaint in a nonbinding resolution
White House will release whistleblower complaint to Congress: official
The White House will also most likely allow the whistleblower, a member of the U.S. intelligence community, to meet with congressional investigators, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Once again, Trump's base does not matter. They are never going to turn on him, but that won't stop him from losing if the rest of the voting public does. And impeachment could absolutely do that.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangPeople seems to be under the expession that more than half of the USA are rabid Trump supporters that wouldn't stop supporting him under every case.
Dude didn't even got half of the votes by himself, and that after a election infamous for it's apathy where his base where the ones that actually went to vote

Watch me destroying my countryRabid Trump supporters no.
They're not the concern, the concern is there's a lot of people who are broadly center in terms of their politics but think all this Russian interference and concentration camps and all of Trump's blatant violations of the constitution aren't real or aren't serious and the entire thing is just your normal partisan political mudslinging.
The average American isn't an entrenched Trump supporter, they're an entrenched bothsides kind of person.
Oh really when?

If I were in position to give a response, it’d be something along the lines of “If you want to let our legislation through, we’d be happy to.”
Of course someone actually qualified could say that in a much more official tone.
