The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Didn't Donald basically flat out say, "yes, I did it" too?

I mean, I guess I can see why he thought it would be no big deal. If he didn't suffer any consequences for all the other stupid shit he does, why would this be any different?

I'm not convinced that this will help Biden in the primary. It's only going to help him in the "electability" stakes, which he was already winning hands down.

So unless it hurts Warren's head to head against Trump then it's a wash for the primary. Heck, giving Warren a stage with the Impeachment trial taking place in the Senate could even work to her advantage.

But it's certainly going to help Biden in the General, something we can all get behind.

"Biden went after Kiev for not cracking down on corruption as VP"

Also worth noting that this was a multinational effort to address the corruption in Ukraine. Biden was the point guy for the US, he wasn't just horsing around in Eastern Europe to get his son some goodies.

I definitely think this could give Biden a boost he does not need or deserve.

Biden's already got the "Electability" vote. This could easily win him the "To Spite Trump" vote.

His (and his supporters') defense seems to be, "Presidents call world leaders all the time, so what?"

As much as I don't want Biden, he'd still be infinitely better than Trump.

Don't let perfect become the enemy of good enough, or something like that.

Well, if this is what gets Biden the nomination, then Trump has basically cut off his nose to spite his face. Because Trump, at least, has been acting as if Biden is already his only opponent. For a while now.

It's going to be interesting to see the transcripts, though I doubt even Trump is dumb enough to go beyond either Could Say It, But... or Shame If Something Happened territory.

You win some, you lose some. Would getting that fucker impeached be worth 4-8 yrs of Biden? I think most ppl here would say yes.

And even Biden might be pressed into taking progressive positions, if Congress remains on its current trends and in Democratic hands.

If this causes Trump to lose and Biden to get elected then I'll buy a Biden campaign record player and use it every night.

And MSNBC is saying that Pelosi has announced the impeachment inquiry. Welp, the ride has started up again.

[up][up]Wasn't Biden the one who openly made the case for gay marriage, effectively forcing Obama to make his own formal statement about the issue?

Just watched it straight from Pelosi's mouth on CSPAN.

May we live in interesting times.

I guess that Trump shouldn't have been so afraid of Biden.

But seriously, we don't even know who will win the primaries yet. What if Trump broke the law... for dirt on a candidate that he won't even be going up against?

It would be funnier if the world wasn't going to pot in so many ways.

Will political scandals from now on be referred to colloquially as "calling Ukraine"? Ukraine-gate?

It would be really unfair to Ukraine to make the country's name synonymous with political scandal because of something an American president did. Then again, I guess Ukraine itself has historically been ripe with political scandal.

A lot of people were hoping Warren could pull off a major upset but Biden's train has been something going strong the entire time.

I think I said at the start: "Biden is my third favorite at best but I think there's no chance he's not going to be the candidate."

It's one thing to say that he's in the lead but it's laughable to assert that his victory is assured.

Biden could lose zero support and still lose the primary.

This might boost Biden's popularity among undecided independents, but they're not the people voting in the primaries. And while it may make Biden more electable, even if Warren gets nominated her pro-impeachment stance might win her some favor against Trump after all.

The Republicans seem to be attempting to spin the news with "But they haven't seen the transcript yet!" as if that's the only problem with this entire incident.

Edit: They just gave their official response, and it's full of something approaching concern trolling? Paraphrased: "2016 is over, the House should be focusing on legislating." The level of projection continues to astound me.

Whether Biden gets a boost from this depends on different factors. I can certainly see Biden milking this for all its worth, but I think the bigger thing here will be whether the media focuses more on the What - Trump extorting Ukraine for political gain - or the Why - Trump extorting Ukraine to bring down Biden.

We often criticize Republicans for being tribal and rallying around their own no matter what crimes they committed. But this is not that. Biden has literally not done anything wrong on this case beyond being the target of Trump's ire. I'm not going to suddenly start phone banking for Joe, but I think it's only natural for Democrats to defend him.
