Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So it seems like there is yet another Trump controversy
, this time apparently about some questionable requests that Trump may have sent to the government of Ukraine.
Some miracle? That's just ignorant defeatist nonsense.
Hillary Clinton was a historically unpopular candidate who made strategic mistakes, faced Comey's letter, Russian interference, and was the recipient of decades of Republican agitprop and she still barely lost. This idea that the country's "track record" points towards a likely Trump re-election is based off him winning a single election and a complete ignorance of how probability works.
Trump is not invulnerable, nor is he competent. He absolutely can be a one-term President.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIndeed, those things and the partisan nature of our politics. There is a critical mass of people who will always vote for their party, so winning a nomination is enough to make one have a chance of winning.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe Ukraine story might actually be a good rallying cry for impeachment, because it's easily understanded. Trump withheld aid to Ukraine unless they conjured up a story about Biden's son, which is a crime and pretty shady. Warren came out in favour of it today in Iowa, for example.
Life is unfair...This interactive map creates randomly-generated state boundaries for the United States, and see who would recent presidential elections under the map. Under different combinations of states, different regions become the deciding factor, and even broad popular support can be overturned by the specific state boundaries.

Maybe they feel that Trump's poor image means they don't have much of a shot of winning anyway so they take a dive with picking him again. Which will backfire majorly if he manages to win 2020
I understand Mark Sanford has been talking legal action.
Of course, the GOP could take a cue from the UK and just say "fuck the courts, we're voting for Trump without a primary and you can't do a thing about it."
Warren Beats Biden and Sanders in Latest Des Moines Register Poll
Warren, the U.S. senator from Massachusetts, now holds a 2-percentage-point lead, with 22% of likely Democratic caucusgoers saying she is their first choice for president. It is the first time she has led in the Register’s poll.
Former Vice President Biden, who had led each of the Register’s three previous 2020 cycle polls, follows her at 20%. Sanders, the U.S. senator from Vermont, has fallen to third place with 11%.
No other candidate reaches double digits.

♭What.

How can people even primary Trump when the GOP has been cancelling the elections left and right to prevent it?
"Yup. That tasted purple."
