Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

France doesn't have the power to assert its influence half the world away, only a select few nations do.
And the rest of South Amercia can't really compete with Brazil at all...
These kinds of limits are why its important for the US to have a sane goverment, because wether one likes it or not it is one of the very few nations with the wealth and political power to stand up to this crap....
And instead, it joined it.....
I feel like that "You were the chosen one Anikin" quote is applicable. :/
Yesterday Kyle Kulinski was able to fulfill his dream of interviewing Bernie Sanders
A little short, unfortunately, but still very interesting.
He talks about division in the Democratic Party, his plans and certain other issues, like Executive Orders, wages, troop deployment, arms deals, sanctions
He sometimes sounds a little self-absorbed ("You are talking to the guy who did X") but he is very clear on his positions and I totally respect that
RE: Rainforest development
This line in particular jumped out at me - Brazil's foreign minister said opening the rainforest to economic development was the only way to protect it.
Fuck him. Fuck the entire Brazilian government for that level of bullshit, and fuck ours for becoming complicit in it while the rainforest burns. It's because of them that my girlfriend's parents are now living in the Damon favelas, after the fires were encroaching on their original home, and it's because of Trump's asinine policies that her parents couldn't come up here on Visitation Visas - they got diverted at the last minute because they hadn't updated them recently enough for new rules.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"First reported by the Wall Street Journal, Trump made the comments while waiting to meet with the Egyptian president. He searched over a gathering of Egyptian and US officials and loudly called out: "Where's my favorite dictator?"
The Journal reported that Trump's question was met with a shocked silence. It was unclear whether al-Sisi heard the remarks.
The White House did not respond to Insider's request for comment.
Trump's comments cast attention on his coziness with authoritarian leaders overseas. Others he has lavished praise on include Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Al-Sisi seized power in a military coup that ousted Egypt's first elected government in 2013. And he's presided over a brutal crackdown, racking up accusations of gross human rights violations that include imprisoning tens of thousands of political opponents, crushing press freedom, and torturing and killing prisoners. The Egyptian government has justified its actions by saying it is combating extremism.
Shortly after he took office, Trump welcomed al-Sisi to the White House for the first time and said had "done a fantastic job in a very difficult situation." The Trump administration has not publicly criticized the Egyptian government's abysmal human rights record.
During the G7 summit, Trump lauded his relationship with the Egyptian strongman before reporters, saying, "We understood each other very well. He's a very tough man, I will tell you that. But he's also a good man, and he's done a fantastic job in Egypt. Not easy."
Kim Jong Un must be feeling so jealous right now.
Latinx Advocacy Groups Sue To Block Citizenship Data Release By Trump Officials – The lawsuit extends a legal fight over the Trump administration's efforts to produce data that a GOP strategist said could be used to politically benefit "Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites."
The lawsuit marks the first legal challenge in response to Trump's July executive order about citizenship data, extending a legal fight that began with the administration's push for the now-blocked citizenship question.
A major GOP strategist had concluded that information — which the Census Bureau has been directed to produce by using citizenship records from other federal agencies and state governments — could be used by state redistricting officials after the 2020 census to redraw voting districts that are "advantageous to Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites."
In a court filing obtained Friday by NPR, attorneys with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and Asian Americans Advancing Justice - AAJC outline allegations that are similar to their earlier lawsuit against the addition of the citizenship question.
They argue that the Trump administration's efforts are part of a conspiracy intended to prevent Latinx communities, noncitizens and other immigrants from receiving fair representation when state and local voting lines are redrawn after the 2020 census.
The challengers also allege that the administration is violating the Administrative Procedure Act in trying to carry out Trump's executive order. Thomas Saenz, MALDEF's president and general counsel, describes the efforts as a way of saving face for the president after the Supreme Court ruled to keep the citizenship question off the 2020 census forms.
"We know that effectively no process was followed," Saenz tells NPR. "It was an announcement made in reaction to the president having to abandon his effort to include a citizenship question."
The Justice Department declined to comment on the lawsuit, according to DOJ spokesperson Kelly Laco.

Likely not. We aren't in any kind of conflict with Egypt and helping a hostile nation is one of the specific requirements for treason.
One thing this thread taught me is that the definition of treason is very, very specific by design so tht word/accusation can't just be thrown around willy Billy.

Since he has yet to make war on the United States or help those who are, it's not treasonous.
And it shouldn't be, being fond of authoritarian leaders shouldn't be treason. If the voters accept it then there is no reason for the law to step in.

So...only in war then? Okay.
So...the death of ObL's son.
What could be the possible fallout from this in the future, if any?

For reference:
Osama bin Laden's son Hamza is dead: White House
Not much in the article itself when I first saw it It looks like it's updated with more details since but here's what was there when I originally posted in the Global Terrorism thread:
The White House said the operation took place in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. “The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives al-Qa’ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his father, but undermines important operational activities of the group,” the statement said.

Here is how treason is defined in federal law:
The word “enemies” is understood to mean a country that Congress has approved the use of force against, so conspiring with modern day Russia isn’t technically treason, though you could be charged with plenty of other assorted crimes for doing so.
They should have sent a poet.People who hate us will continue to hate us and the ones aligned with him may be weakened, those who like us may like us more. Or their approval may be unchanged.
So it's good but unlikely to be earthshaking.

I still say you could make a solid argument for aiding any country covered by the Trading with the Enemy Act, most countries were removed from the slit in 1946 (though the USSR had brief periods of being sanctioned under it), China was removed in ‘75, Vietnam came off the list in ‘94, North Korea did in ‘08 and Cuba remain on it now.
