Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The main problem is that as far as we're aware, there aren't specific numbers for how many families were separated during the Obama administration. We know how many apprehended
adults were referred for prosecution, but not how many children could have possibly been separated. The Obama administration, from what I've read, tried to keep families together as much as possible, although the DHS secretary during Obama admitted that there may have been some instances, but not because that was what they were supposed to do. Equating Trump's zero-tolerance policy with the detention that the Obama administration practiced, however, is disingenuous and entirely misleading. Jeff Sessions himself admitted that separating children from their families was what they wanted to do under Trump's zero-tolerance policy.

Oh God! Natural light!Sanders made a point that he's the only one onstage to vote against all three of Trump's military budget, which includes - as Sanders supporters on Twitter have been very keen to point out - Warren.
While not a dealbreaker for me, I would like to see a definitive answer for that.

Oh God! Natural light!
That's a good point, and might explain why he's been relatively quiet tonight. He's really only spoken when he's had to.
Also, props to Castro for calling out charter schools, however briefly.
Oh God! Natural light!Joke's on Yang, Booker also had a debate first - mentioning March of the Penguins.
Oh God! Natural light!Apparently, the protesters were chanting about DACA and saying that their lives were at risk.
Hard for me to merely call them attention-grabbing when it was about something like that, though considering how hard it was to hear them, I don't suppose that it was most well-planned protest.
Oh God! Natural light!Well, when your life is on the line, I can understand not particularly caring about civility.
Actually, I would argue that they were more considerate than they could have been, having waited until the policy discussions were over.

Oh God! Natural light!I disagree, they accomplished nothing. They didn't bring up DACA's profile or support, they just behaved like obnoxious children.
They did nothing to advance the cause of DACA, just because they have legitimate reasons to fear does justify every action.
Especially when literally every Democratic candidate supports DACA
.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

I don't doubt that, but the "only" part seems ill-advised, at least.
Oh God! Natural light!
