The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It also works out for the better on occasion, like when it ruled bans on interracial marriage unconstitutional dispite being agianst the morals of the era, and having overwhelmingly negative public oppinion.

There is merit to a branch that only judges the legality of an action, rather then the morals of the action...

Which is another issue with the republicians stacking it with partisan judges.

Do not forget that California and Canada are not monoliths. Plenty of people in both would balk at the idea.

And in this scenario, its probably taking Oregon and Washington along for the ride.

Just go independent, and we can form an EU type thing with the decent parts of North America.tongue

    Day 965: Boneheads.
1/ Trump ordered Mick Mulvaney to have NOAA repudiate a tweet by weather forecasters that contradicted his statement that Hurricane Dorian posed a significant threat to Alabama. Mulvaney then called Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to tell him to have the forecasters disavow their position that Alabama was not at risk. Ross, in turn, threatened to fire top employees at NOAA if the situation was not addressed. Trump, meanwhile, denied ordering Mulvaney to direct Ross to pressure NOAA to rebuke scientists who contradicted his hurricane claim, saying "I never did that — I never did that," dismissing the situation as "a hoax by the fake news media." (New York Times / Washington Post / Politico)

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/09/11/trump-mick-mulvaney-hurricane-dorian-claims-1489686

2/ The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology opened an investigation into Ross pressuring the acting administrator of NOAA into supporting Trump's false claim about Hurricane Dorian. The committee also demanded documents and information related to the unsigned statement that NOAA issued that was perceived as rebuking its own scientists for contradicting Trump's claim that Dorian would hit Alabama "harder than anticipated." (New York Times)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/11/climate/noaa-wilbur-ross-dorian.html

📌 Day 963: Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross threatened to fire NOAA employees after the agency's Birmingham office contradicted Trump's claim that Alabama would be hit "harder than anticipated" by Hurricane Dorian. Ross directed Neil Jacobs, the acting administrator of NOAA, to fix the agency’s perceived contradiction of the president. Jacobs initially objected to the demand, but was told by Ross that the political staff at NOAA would be fired if the situation was not resolved. NOAA then sided with Trump over its own scientists, stating that Alabama was in fact threatened by the storm at the time of Trump's tweet that Alabama would "most likely be hit (much) harder than anticipated." NOAA is a division of the Commerce Department. (New York Times / Washington Post)

3/ The Trump administration will not grant temporary protected status to Bahamians displaced by Hurricane Dorian. Temporary protected status would have let Bahamians work and live in the U.S. until it is deemed safe to return home. (NBC News)

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/trump-admin-will-deny-temporary-protected-status-bahamians-who-fled-n1052561

4/ Trump's trade war with China has reduced U.S. employment by 300,000 jobs through a combination of eliminated jobs by companies struggling with tariffs and jobs that would have been created but weren't because of reduced economic activity. Moody's Analytics forecasts that the job toll from the trade war will hit about 450,000 by the end of the year, if there are no changes in policy. (Yahoo Finance)

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trumps-trade-war-has-killed-300000-jobs-194717808.html

5/ Trump called on the "boneheads" at the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates to "ZERO, or less" and again blamed the Fed for a slowing U.S. economy. Trump also called on the Fed to "start to refinance our debt" despite there being no modern precedent for the refinancing of federal debt. The U.S. is currently $22.5 trillion in debt, $16.7 trillion of which is owed by the public. The federal debt burden has grown by 13% – $2.6 trillion – under Trump, due in part to the 2017 tax cut Trump pushed through Congress. (CNBC / Washington Post / Politico)

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/09/11/trump-fed-boneheads-1488845

6/ Trump tweeted "never forget" to mark the 18th anniversary of the Sept. 11th terror attacks, but after first attacking the "Amazon Washington Post/ABC" over an unfavorable poll, which he called a "phony suppression poll." Trump also tweeted about the Federal Reserve and pressuring it to lower interest rates, congratulating Republicans in a North Carolina special election, and ranting about China and his trade war. Republicans in Iowa and New Hampshire have promised not to cancel their caucus and primary for 2020 even as GOP leaders in other states have canceled party elections to help clear the way for Trump's reelection. GOP officials in New Hampshire said that "under no circumstances" will they ever cancel the state's primary election, "whether there’s token opposition or a serious contest." Iowa Republicans said it was "never even up for discussion." (Associated Press)

Trump posted a photo of a "Trump 2024" campaign sign on Twitter and Instagram, joking once again that he is interested in serving more than two terms. So it's working as intended, then?

In a way, that's even worse.

Unfortunately.

There are two checks on what the President should be doing. The first is the voters; our system charges voters to ensure that the person who gets into office is a responsible human being who will wield the Executive's power properly.

The second check is the Legislative branch. The Legislative is charged with overseeing the President's actions, weighing the merits of his nominated officials, and if necessary, removing him from power should he prove to be a corrupt or unethical individual.

So far as Executive oversight goes, all the Judicial is charged with is making sure it's not literally illegal for the President to do whatever he's doing. That the rules as written actually say, "Yes, the President can do this thing he just did by the power granted him through the United States Constitution and other associated laws."

We're in a position where both the Voter Check and the Legislative Check have failed to keep a corrupt and incompetent President from gaining and holding onto power. As such, even setting aside the unfavorable Court makeup, there's only so much the Judicial can do.

Trump has left the impression on multiple people within his circles that he plans to support the French Plan of giving 15 Billion US Dollars to Iran to get them to rejoin the Obama-made Nuclear Deal. Keep in mind, Trump was the one who killed the Iranian Deal in the first place and part of the reason why was because we gave them 400 Million we technically owed them from before the Revolution.

If this ends up happening...on the one hand at least it means maybe the nuclear deal will be salvaged. Maybe.

On the other hand...fifteen billion dollars. To get us back to where we already were before Trump fucked everything up. Except worse since scrapping the deal in the first place cost us so much cred.

A consistent pattern of Trump's behaviour has been to create diplomatic crises by rejecting previous arrangements, then backing down and renegotiating a similar or identical deal under a different name, claiming credit for "improving" what was already there. Going back to the Iran deal under minor differences while also giving up significant additional credibility or assets along the way would not be that far-fetched for him.
