The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think what I meant was, "Here's how we might do a universal basic income, using Alaska's Fund as a model."

Coke Zero and Diet Coke aren't much better. Hell, the artificial Sweeteners in both are considered to be worse then Real Sugar when it comes to not only diabetic issues, but also contain chemcials that increase the likelyhood of cancer production.

[up] The science is still up in the air about those things. Everyone seems to agree that the artificial sweeteners in "diet" soda are problematic, but what exactly the risk is changes from study to study. We've seen reports of elevated diabetes risk, weight gain, stroke, cancer, and heart disease, but these are all being sensationalized and the hype is obscuring the science.

Regardless, I'm sure as hell not drinking regular soda. Might as well just inject sugar right into your bloodstream.

It may vary from person to person since my blood sugar has been substantially lowered by switching to diet sodas.

Classic or bust.

Tom Steyer has qualified for the next debate. Unless one of the previous ten drops out, that means we'll have 11 candidates and a split night debate in October.

Goddamn it, the plutocrat got in. These standards are ridiculous, 11 and possibly more in the second debate.

Silver lining, two debates with 5-6 candidates means everyone should get longer than 12 minutes to speak.

[up][up] Real water... and not some sugary-witch brew which people keep mistaking for actual liquids (the moment sugar gets into it, it stops being real water)...

That said, if this "Red Button for coke" is true, then who is bringing it in to him? And will the one winning next year come to find marks after a paper cup on the big desk?

That said, and now for some serious topics... Now when the congress is back from the break, what do you think will be the first thing they'll tackle from their long list of things left unresolved during their absence?

[up][up][up]It's still "real" water, just with stuff added to it.

And I wouldn't go touting water as some miracle elixir. Sure, most people could probably stand to drink more water on a daily basis. But there is such a thing as too much water — look up water poisoning some time. You can go wrong with the source of all life in your system if you have too much of it.

Congress and its return with a long list to deal with.

Which one do you all think will be the first one?

Impeachment. Gun talks. Diverted military funds. Spending talks. Revising NAFTA. China tariffs or something else?

Budget talks. Maybe NAFTA but I doubt it. The House might do those things above, but the Senate never will.

On the subject of the debates, god damn you Steyer. Now we can only hope Biden ends up on the same stage as Bernie and Warren.

[up]Agreed, that's why I'm more annoyed than angry. Still, there's a possibility that one of them might make it into the second debate. Which'd be awful, neither them nor the new plutocrat has any place on the stage with serious candidates (and Yang).
