Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Warren may not be your favorite, but at least give her the minimal respect she deserves, rather than assuming she’s lying about her plans or half-assed her research. And please cite a source for your assertion, especially given that you keep presenting it as fact.
This.

I wasn't the one who suggested it was a thought experiment. Another poster did a while back. A defender of Warren at that.
And I give Warren exactly the respect she deserves. I think she's a flawed candidate, but better than most of the rest of the field we've got. She is my "favorite" in the sense that I'll probably be voting for her in the primaries.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAsking for a flawless candidate is like waiting for a unicorn to show up on your doorstep. You'll be sitting there a long time while the world passes you by. Warren is by far the best candidate in terms of her policy positions, in my opinion.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
I just think she's a bit more flawed than most other posters seem to think. Not enough for me to not vote for her, but enough for me to point out the flaws when I see them.
I don't need a flawless candidate. I voted for HRC after all.

Disgusted, but not surprisedSeriously, this.
I said this before, but "Republicans will try and stop it" is the "It dies to removal" argument of politics. Republicans will try and stop everything we do. We could pass a motion that sandwiches are tasty num-nums, and Republicans would try to block it both in Congress and in court.
If we handcuff ourselves to a firm standard of only enacting policies that won't face Republican opposition, then we might as well not even run for office in the first place 'cause the only thing we'll be doing in office is sitting with our thumbs up our asses.
And they'll probably still be asking the court to order us to remove our thumbs.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Since we've somehow come back to this tax plan...
Democrats give cold shoulder to Warren wealth tax
The headline of course doesn't tell the whole story. A lot of Democratic officials are not getting behind it for various reasons, even if they largely agree with the spirit of the idea. Some are focused on their own tax plan ideas. Others don't want to appear as if they are endorsing any one candidate. They also have some doubts as to whether it will actually perform well in reality.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI don't think it's very reasonable to automatically smear every person skeptical with it as being stooges for the wealthy, especially considering that the criticism seems to be "it won't be very effective, look at my wealth tax instead".
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHuh,so googled "Trump promises tax cuts " out of interests and this pops up
https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/trumpometer/subjects/taxes/
About the only promises he kept are "Raise tariffs on goods imported into the U.S" and "Create a 10-percent repatriation tax" everthing else was a comprise or a broken promise
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverFrom what I've heard, Trump's kept a lot of the promises he made, but those promises are terrible.
The problem isn't that his campaign was built on lies; it's that his campaign was built on a platform of violent, racist, classist horror. And he has lived down to that violent, racist, classist horror in every way available to him.
He was being pretty truthful about his intentions to be a white supremacist monster who devours the poor and destroys our relationship with our foreign allies. That's one of the most common Trump Regrets I hear. "I voted for this guy 'cause I thought it was just tough guy rhetoric and he'd really be a responsible President, but then he actually WAS the awful human dumpster fire that I voted for."

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them." If people have realized that since 2016, then at least 2020 may play out a little better.
So the DOJ, in another stunning move, is now investigating whether the deal reached between 4 automakers (Ford, BMW AG, Volkswagen AG, and Honda Motor Co.) and California to curb emissions violates antitrust laws
.
The Justice Department declined to comment.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"... you don't understand how undermining the administration going "okay, pollution isn't bad, go pollute!" is going to upset Trump?
... Jesus, he really is a Captain Planet villain.

Because they aren't focused on auto-makers' profits - they're focused on profits for coal, oil, and stomping out any attempts at going green.
Plus what
said - the DOJ is now headed by a guy that's overtly loyal to Trump, after all.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"It's just that he was totally honest about the horrible shit.

Well yeah, bottomline is, that getting a democratic president can only be Step 1. Next step has to be solidifying the House and getting the Senate back. Otherwise, there'll be endless meddling.
