There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations

before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Democrats were opposed to the Communists during the Cold War. The infamous Bay of Pigs incident was carried out by a Democratic president. They did side with the Chinese during the Sino-Soviet split out of a desire to weaken the then-more-powerful Soviets, but that unfortunately led to things like turning a blind eye to the Chinese-backed Cambodian genocides as a part of that.

Warren adopts and expands on Inslee’s climate plan
Edit: Castro has also released part of a new climate plan, inspired by Inslee’s plan.
I’m really glad to see them both take up the standard; I hope the rest of the field follows suit.

The communist break with the Democratic Party happened prior to World War 2 with the New Deal. I mentioned it in a very badly explained way but the party (acting with alleged instructions from Russia) was told to oppose reforms because it would result in the continuing propping up of capitalism while only its collapse could lead to a communist state. They also switched gears on Civil Rights and stopped supporting it to try to go mainstream while encouraging war with Hitler (again on instructions from Russia that was paying for it) after initially being against it due to being pro-isolationism.
The HUAC smacked down on it as did Hoover but by that point, most of its members had abandoned it in disgust. Amusingly, Hoover admitted he accidentally kept it afloat as something like 1/5th of its registered donors were actually paid informants for the FBI (or pressured into it).

2/ Trump "suggested" that Pence stay at his Irish golf club and hotel during a taxpayer-funded trip, despite the meetings taking place more than 150 miles away. Pence is traveling with his wife, sister, and mother, and was originally scheduled to end his trip at Trump's golf club in Doonbeg. Pence will now fly back and forth from Doonbeg to Dublin for his meetings – more than an hour flight each way. Both Pence and an aide defended the arrangement, claiming that the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel was "the one facility" in Ireland that could accommodate the delegation traveling with Pence. Since 2017, Pence's political group has spent about $224,000 at Trump properties. (NBC News / Daily Beast / Associated Press / New York Times / CNN /Washington Post)

3/ A company that Trump's campaign manager owns received more than $900,000 in business from a pro-Trump super PAC. Brad Parscale created Red State Data and Digital to act as a "firewall company" that allowed it to continue working with the America First super PAC during the midterm elections without violating election rules that prohibit coordination between a campaign and a super PAC. Red State was founded on March 2, 2018 – days after it was announced that Parscale would become Trump's 2020 campaign manager. (CNN / ABC News)

4/ A group of Trump's allies is trying to raise at least $2 million to investigate reporters and editors Trump doesn't like. In a fundraising pitch, the group claims it will provide damaging information about reporters and editors to "friendly media outlets," such as Breitbart, as well as traditional media when possible. GOP consultant Arthur Schwartz will be involved with the fundraising effort, along with several others associated with the "loose network" of operatives identified by the New York Times last week. The prospectus for the project says it is "targeting the people producing the news." (Axios)
5/ The Trump administration will divert $3.6 billion this week from 127 military construction projects to build to build 175 miles of Trump's border wall. Trump declared a national emergency in February to draw funding from federal accounts to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said about half of the funding will come from military construction projects outside the United States and half will come from projects within the country. (Politico / Washington Post)
6/ Trump tweeted a detailed aerial photo of an Iranian launchpad from that appears to have come from a classified intelligence briefing. The photo shows the aftermath of an accident at Iran's Imam Khomeini Space Center. Some experts suspect that the image in Trump's tweet might have come from a drone or a spy plane, confirming that the U.S. is violating Iran's airspace to spy on the missile program. Amateur satellite trackers, however, say image was taken by one of the United States' most secretive surveillance satellites, USA 224. The capabilities of USA 224 are so closely guarded that people have been sent to prison for leaking photos from them. Trump denied responsibility for the extensive damage to the launchpad and defended his decision to tweet the photo, saying: "We had a photo and I released it, which I have the absolute right to do." London Mayor Sadiq Khan mocked Trump for "dealing with a hurricane out on the golf course." Trump cancelled his trip to Poland to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II to instead concentrate on Hurricane Dorian. Instead, he played golf at his private club in Virginia. (Politico)
Trump refused to retract his claim that Hurricane Dorian was poised to hit Alabama, even though the National Weather Service said he was wrong. The NWS office in Birmingham rejected Trump's assertion that Alabama was in the storm's path, tweeting: "We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane Dorian will be felt across Alabama." Trump, meanwhile, explained that it's "Always good to be prepared!" (CNN / New York Times / The Hill / Yahoo! News)
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos scaled back an Obama-era federal student loan forgiveness policy for borrowers who claim they were misled or deceived by their colleges. The new rules will make it more difficult for federal student loan borrowers to cancel their debt on the grounds that their college defrauded them. (Politico)

U.S. manufacturing contracted for the first time since 2016, heightening fears that the trade war with China could bring on a recession. The Institute for Supply Management's purchasing managers index fell to 49.1 in August. Figures below 50 indicate the manufacturing economy is generally shrinking. (Bloomberg / New York Times)

I've commented on Trump and Dorian in the tropical cyclones thread, but I would like to emphasize that a "cone of uncertainty" isn't a "cone of outside-of-it-you-are-perfectly-safe", as the NHC reminds us on every page they show such a cone. It is also a fairly innocuous error.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanNo, but he'll be first in line for government payouts to rebuild.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"When Dorian was predicted into going into Florida, the center of the Cone of Uncertainty was within 20 miles of Mar-a-Lago for a day or so (I checked using the provided coordinates from the National Hurricane Center).
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Well, Dorian seems to be sparing Florida the worst of its wrath. Now we'll see how Trump and Congress justify not helping the Bahamas.

Please don't joke like that. That's not funny because a lot of other people would have been in the cross-hairs and Trump would have likely misused FEMA funds or overexaggerated the damage to drain FEMA more.
Personally though, I would really like a small localized storm, riiiight over the top of all of Trump's properties, which would last until Trump is gone from the presidency. Alas, I understand that's not realistically possible and has it's own implications on the surroundings.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I hope everyone in the path of the hurricane, any hurricane, can get to safety.
But, not gonna lie, I would pay a hurricane money to flatten just the building of Mar-a-Lago. Be out there in Florida sliding Benjamins under tables just before they're picked up by the gale-force winds.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Incidentally, Trump's saying that he's never even heard of a Cat 5 hurricane before.
During other Cat 5 hurricanes in recent history, he's made similar comments. "I've never even HEARD of a Cat 5!" "I've never heard of a Cat 5 touching land before, wow!"
I love how Trump can, with a straight face, say that each hurricane we see is a natural disaster on a magnitude unprecedented in human history (it's not) and then turn around and say that climate change isn't real (it is).

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Gentle reminder that Mar-a-Lago is on the island of Palm Beach, just across the intercoastal from West Palm Beach (a city of 100,000 people) and in the middle of Palm Beach County (with a population of nearly 1.5 million). "Hey hurricane, can you swing back around and flatten the place?" jokes are not especially funny when you or your family would be in the line of fire for that.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Genuine communists actually tend to oppose the Democratic Party.
