Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I wouldn't be too worried about him starting a war. He's a Quisling and a draft dodger. I'm much more worried about him pulling the US military out of places it's needed.

Too late.
Trump: If I say I should be on Mt. Rushmore, 'I will end up with such bad publicity'
President Trump is clearly sensitive to the optics of saying he should be on Mount Rushmore.
"If I answer that question, 'Yes,' I will end up with such bad publicity," Trump told The Hill on Monday in an exclusive interview, when asked if his head should be carved among the giant granite sculpture of past presidents featured at the famed landmark.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) said in a 2018 interview that Trump once told her it was his "dream" to be featured beside former presidents Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
"I said, 'Mr. President, you should come to South Dakota sometime. We have Mount Rushmore,' " Noem recalled telling Trump during a visit in the Oval Office.
"And he goes, 'Do you know it's my dream to have my face on Mount Rushmore?' " Noem continued. "I started laughing. He wasn't laughing, so he was totally serious."
At a 2017 rally, Trump quipped to cheers from the crowd, “I’d ask whether or not you think I will someday be on Mount Rushmore."
"But, no — here’s the problem," Trump said. "If I did it joking, totally joking, having fun, the fake news media will say, ‘He believes he should be on Mount Rushmore!”
So is Trump. Honest, guv!
In more positive news:
Ginsburg: 'I'm on my way to being very well' after cancer treatment
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Saturday that she is on her way "to being very well" after receiving cancer treatment, adding that she will be prepared when the high court's next term begins in October.
“This audience can see that I am alive. And I’m on my way to being very well,” she said at the annual National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
Ginsburg said her job has kept her going, even as she faced cancer before.
“I love my job. It is the best and hardest job that I ever had,” she said. "It has kept me going through four cancer bouts. Instead of concentrating on my aches and pains, I just know that I have to read this set of briefs," said the liberal justice.
To be fair, Trump is saying he thinks it would be neat to have his face on Mt. Rushmore. He didn't say he has serious plans to do it.

In one of a series I read, an idea used to boost morale among the troops was to a picture of the Big Bad's face and put it on the bottom of chamber pots.
Trump trails Democrats by a historically large margin
Biden is ahead Trump by the most (16 points, 54% to 38%), while Buttigeg is up by the least (9 points, 49% to 40%).
What's the point: The Quinnipiac poll was the second probability poll that meets CNN standards and was conducted in August which found Trump down by at least 5 points against all his most likely challengers. In both the Fox News poll
out earlier this month and Quinnipiac's latest, he trailed his most likely challenger, Biden, by double-digits. In fact, in an average of all the August polls (those that meet CNN standards and not), Biden was up by a 49% to 39% margin.
We're still over a year away from the 2020 general election, so don't take these polls to the bank.
Still, it's worth pointing out the historically bad position Trump is in. No incumbent president has ever polled this poorly against his likely challengers at this point in the campaign.
These are the same polls that made it look like Hillary would win in 2016 for sure. So I'm not putting much weight in those numbers.
Unless Texas(!) and Florida go blue, there's still a chance the Rotten Orange could come back to power.
Also, can I just say that the Toilet Humour being used on Trump is a bit over the top? It's amusing, but hardly decorous - even if he deserves to be mocked that way.
I hold the secrets of the machine.> No incumbent president has ever polled this poorly against his likely challengers at this point in the campaign.
To surprise of no one, when you go out of your way to make people dislike you this is the result, him winning isn't impossible but it's looking increasingly like he's going to get slaughtered at the polls
Edit:> can I just say that the Toilet Humour being used on Trump is a bit over the top? It's amusing, but hardly decorous - even if he deserves to be mocked that way.

25th Amendment: use it. It's made for reducing the impact of escalating, dysfunctional personality disorders on toast getting into the hot seat.
Use it before he starts a war, please. It may be too late to prevent a worldwide economic disaster, though.
