The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Still, Trump is only a symptom of some of the dark undercurrents in US politics. Racism and anti-intellectualism aren’t just going to go away. As we’ve seen with the alt-right these things are alive and well, and will continue to be alive and well post-Trump.

Alive? Yes.

But whether it will be Well has yet to be seen, if the Republican Party collapses then that would be the result of a firm public rejection of their racism and thus the alt-right is hardly going to do any better considering that they lack even the Republicans fig-leaf pretension of not being racist.

Dark undercurrents will exist, but there's a pretty big difference between having the power to take the White House, or the Senate, and not.

[up] I see, thank you for answering my question earlier.

It has been brewing on my mind for the last two years while following the news of this presidency ever since he got sworn into the White House on the inauguration...

Glad to have it answered at last.

(And "no", it wasn't through "Fox".)

The public isn't going to firmly reject something that the public refuses to even acknowledge exists. Millions of people legitimately believe that "The Party of Lincoln isn't racist!"

The most-watched news network in America is hard at work churning out propaganda, up to and including proclaiming that the Southern Strategy is an insidious racist myth cooked up by Democrats to trick people into voting for them. And people consume that propaganda because, again, it's the most-watched news network in America.

Sure, it'd be great if the whole nation stood up as one and denounced the white supremacist party forever in 2020. But since a quarter of the nation is convinced that all of that is just "FAKE NEWS" and another quarter sees it as a good thing, the Republicans aren't going anywhere.

The idea that the Republicans will just suddenly collapse in 2020 and then white supremacy will vanish forever is a pipe dream. This is a culture war, and it's going to take a long time to win.

A new poll has come out with Warren and Sanders tied at the top with Biden one point behind them.

Now, this is one poll so we shouldn't assume that it's 100% representative but it's still a great example of why previous comments declaring Biden the presumptive victory were highly hasty.

The primary is no way over and Biden's victory is far from assured.

New poll showing a three way race between Warren, Sanders and Biden. If there was ever a primary where every vote counts, it's this one. I'd personally recommend one of the more progressive options, since I can't actually vote in it. [nja]

RE: The poll - I'm more than a bit skeptical due to the small sample size - The Monmouth poll, which was conducted Aug. 16-20, surveyed 298 Democratic voters. The margin of error is plus or minus 5.7 percentage points.

That's a pretty big margin of error.

[down],[down][down]

Ironically, the poll got the seal of approval from the DNC - Monmouth University's poll is approved by the Democratic National Committee for deciding which candidate's make the primary debates. But this survey offers virtually no help to candidates who haven’t already qualified for the third debate next month in Houston ahead of Wednesday’s deadline.

I didn't think a poll of less than 300 people would be even worth publishing.

That's kind of a large margin of error. And that small sample size...

Yeesh. I wouldn't put much stock in this poll.

Okay, hold up. Monmouth's own article on the poll says this:

"The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from August 16 to 20, 2019 with 800 adults in the United States. Results in this release are based on 298 registered voters who identify as Democrats or lean toward the Democratic Party, which has a +/- 5.7 percentage point sampling margin of error."

As terrible as Trump is, I don't think that him losing his power (or the Republican Party, for that matter) is gonna substantially cripple the Alt-Right.

Because the sad truth is: Most of the extreme figureheads of that movement (and their followers) have already stopped supporting him. In their minds, he isn't racist/extreme enough.

Biggest danger with Trump is that his election proved people like him can win elections,so if/when he loses power someone smater and worse could fill in his shoes very easily

Put it this way, somewhere out there is a smater Trump, leagues smarter in fact, and they've got great skills as an orator and know how to fire up a crowd in a ways Trump could never consider, and they dont even need Russian interference to win elections, and they're looking for entry into politics, and Trump's election has just opened that door them

I'm not a fan of Sanders but if I could vote it's no contest between him and Trump. Anyone not doing the same is being irresponsible.
