The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here are some other highlights from the press talks: When Trump said "Jewish People who vote Democrat are disloyal", he meant to Israel and the Jewish Race. So that is absolutely out and out Antisemitic, even though Trump shouted that it's only Antisemetism "in your head".

Trump is also "very seriously" considering ending Birthright Citizenship, which would be unconstitutional.

@Robrecht But that can be said of virtually any ideology. To use your own mad lib analogy, Marxism would fill in Working Class, The Bourgeois, and Revolution in that order.

Objectivism and Fascism agree on a Social Darwinism of sorts, but beyond that they're pretty different (to the point of being nearly opposites in many ways).

Fascism is all about tribalism. The appeal of the ideology is being able to subsume your individuality, be part of a larger whole, and know who your enemy is. It's the mentality of over-enthusiastic team sports fans that the fascist is trying to tap into (indeed, Hitler did analyze team sports for inspiration).

Objectivism is basically the opposite. It's a hipsterish philosophy based on nonconformism, and never doing anything for anyone. At most, you could say it's fascism, except everyone's their own fuhrer, though that kind of defeats the whole point of fascism.

Now, to be fair, I'm not overly fond of Objectivism, though I do think it has a worse reputation than it deserves. I consider the ideology naive and idealistic. The world's far too cruel to have "live and let live" be a workable ethos for a functioning society.

[up] And the really sad thing is there are enough people drowning in the Jim Jones brand Almond-scented Flavorade to celebrate Trump as just that.

Almost as irksome is the knowledge that, if Trump is cracking under the stress, the Republicans still won't remove him if they can help it.

I think the sad thing is most of the ICE guards would do it. Much of the military would probably be fine with it too. Just because they’re obligated to disobey unlawful orders doesn’t mean they will, especially if they think it’s not unlawful.

Well, if it comes to a court-martialing, what you think doesn't matter. If an order was unlawful and you obeyed it anyway, you're still on the hook for it.

Also, I'm in the military. So please, watch what you imply.

The military wouldn’t do it, if nothing else the command structure wouldn’t enable it, you’d maybe get one guy trying to leave base to do a murder rampage and they’d get stopped.

ICE agents, especially if Trump offered instant pardons...

Trump is also "very seriously" considering ending Birthright Citizenship, which would be unconstitutional.

I wonder if he'll try to apply it retroactively. If he did, that would apply to his own father since his father benefited from birthright citizenship. Trump would still be a US citizen because his mother had been naturalised by the time he was born, but she benefited from chain migration (something else he wants to get rid of).

    Day 944: Absurd
1/ The Trump administration will terminate the 20-day cap for detaining migrant children and allow the government to indefinitely detain migrant families who cross the border illegally. The new regulation, announced by acting Department of Homeland Security chief Kevin Mc Aleenan, requires approval from a federal judge before it can go into effect and could be in defiance of the 2015 Flores agreement, which limited the time families could be detained to 20 days. Trump and Republicans have repeatedly blamed the 20-day rule for encouraging migrants to arrive at the border with their children expecting to be released. Administration officials claim the new rule will serve as a deterrent against migrant families. The Trump administration proposed a similar rule in September 2018 that would have allowed the government to detain migrant children for longer periods of time, so long as they were treated with "dignity, respect and special concern for their particular vulnerability as minors." (ABC News / Washington Post / Wall Street Journal / NBC News / New York Times)

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/trump-administration-lift-limit-how-long-it-can-detain-migrant-n1044666

2/ The Trump administration is considering a plan to allow states and cities the ability to deny entry to refugees approved for resettlement in the United States. According to the draft order, "the federal government will resettle refugees only where both the relevant state and local governments have consented to participate" in the program. If a jurisdiction does not agree, the federal government will find another location. Trump, meanwhile, is debating whether to decrease refugee admissions starting on Oct. 1. In fiscal year 2016, the limit was 85,000 refugees; in fiscal year 2019, the number was 30,000. (NBC News)

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/trump-admin-weighs-letting-states-cities-deny-entry-refugees-approved-n1044801

3/ Trump accused Jewish Democrats of "show[ing] either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty," repeating an anti-Semitic trope that Jews have a "dual loyalty" and are more devoted to Israel than they are to their own countries. Trump's comments came in response to a question about Rep. Ilhan Omar's suggestion that the U.S. should reconsider how much foreign aid it pays to Israel. Trump also tweet-quoted a conservative radio host and known conspiracy theorist, who praised Trump as "the greatest President for Jews," that Israelis "love him like he is the second coming of God," and that Trump is "the King of Israel." (NBC News / New York Times / Associated Press / Washington Post / The Guardian)

https://apnews.com/1bc3065eb2e4414289ef0ac1ac4ebaf7

4/ The federal budget deficit is growing faster than expected and the Congressional Budget Office forecasts the deficit will expand by about $800 billion more than previously expected over 10 years. The U.S. was already expected to hit about $1 trillion in annual deficits next year, but the shortfall will expand by $1.9 trillion in new spending over the next decade because of a budget deal to avoid the spending cliff and an emergency spending package for the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. It would be the first time the deficit exceeded the $1 trillion mark since 2012, when the economy was recovering from the financial crisis. By 2029, the national debt will reach its highest level as a share of the economy since the end of World War II. (Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal / Washington Post / New York Times)

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-08-21/u-s-budget-gap-to-top-1-trillion-in-2020-amid-election-year

5/ Trump is no longer considering "a tax cut now," because – he claimed – "we don't need it. We have a strong economy." Yesterday, Trump confirmed that he is considering "various tax reductions," including a payroll tax cut, to stimulate a weakening American economy. Meanwhile, acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney promised top GOP donors that if an election-year recession hits, it would be "moderate and short." (Wall Street Journal / Politico)

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/20/donald-trump-gop-donors-recession-1470360

6/ Trump cancelled his trip to Denmark because the Danish prime minister would not sell him Greenland and had "no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland." Trump accused Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of making "nasty" comments and that "she blew me off" and made "not a nice statement" about his interest in purchasing Greenland. Frederiksen called Trump's idea of selling Greenland "absurd." (NPR / BBC / New York Times / New York Times / NBC News / NBC News /Washington Post / Washington Post)

poll/ 65% of Americans say current economic conditions are good – down five percentage points since May. The drop is the first significant decline in public perception about the economy during Trump's presidency. (CNN)

It's the mentality of over-enthusiastic team sports fans that the fascist is trying to tap into (indeed, Hitler did analyze team sports for inspiration).

Fair point. Still, the crucial difference between the 'mad lib' that both Nazism and Objectivism use and the one that, say, Marxism uses is that Marxism blames a system (Capitalism) and while it may designate certain people propping it up (the Bourgeoisie) as the enemy, they stop being the enemy once they stop supporting Capitalism (and also to most Marxist ideologies, the 'penalty' for being the enemy isn't death).

But Nazism and Objectivism both blame 'the Other'. Both of them deem the in-group to be worthy and the out-group to be parasites whose very existence diminishes that worthiness. Objectivism at it's core is really just Nazism retooled along economic, rather than ethnic lines.

And just looking at the way she treated the members of her inner circle Ayn Rand 'wasn't authoritarian' in the same way Maximilien 'Just the First Citizen' Robbespierre and Joseph 'What are you talking about, I'm just the party's secretary' Stalin 'weren't authoritarian'. Other than not having the authority of a nation-state government behind her, Rand treated the people she did have power over no different from those two (and, you know, Hitler).

New Yorkers are a stubborn lot, for better or worse. Remember that Trump is a (much loathed) New Yorker. As is Hillary Clinton. My aunt spent most of her young adulthood in New York too, and even decades later she still bears its influence.

[up]x3 Problem is, if Mark Sanford also ends up running, they're going to split the Neocon vote, and for any successful challenger against Trump, they're going to need all of the votes. Then again, the odds are low that either Sanford or Walsh will beat Trump (and it's even worse for Weld; the Libertarian Branch has never had any real power in the Republican Party, just lip service and a few Reps).

There is, by the way, a really funny slant to the claim that Israelis love Trump like the Second Coming of God.

Given that the Second Coming is a Christian doctrine that has no place or meaning in Judaism and if it occurred the only response from Jews would be a confused 'What the fuck?', I'm inclined to say that's the only part of that entire claim that's accurate.

Angry gets shit done.
