Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Septimus, I know that 538 have run some of the numbers and Democrats do outnumber Republicans, they’ve been hammering on for ages that Trump’s base alone isn’t enough to win him reelection.
In a world where there was perfect 100% turnout every election democrats would win every time under current conditions, because there are simply more people who identify with the Democratic Party than with those he republicans party, Trump has also exacerbated that situation with his own tactics.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran> Aye, we don't spend 24/7 hearing stories about Warren being corrupt and the DNA test thing seems to have been forgotten.
She is never living down the DNA test thing ever unfortunately, and Trump branding her pocahontas ensures it clings to her like mud
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverUh no, no one cares about the DNA thing anymore.
None of those would have been the slightest issue had Hillary been a man.
No one's saying that sexism doesn't exist or didn't impact her, just that it was sexism plus decades of smears.

I'm not trying to say that a lot of the electorate isn't sexist, just that you can't say that someone like Warren will lose because of what happened to Hillary. Regardless of sexism people will respond differently to different female candidates. A large part of the electorate is racist too, didn't stop Obama from winning.
More specifically, the smears happened because she was a First Lady who was also a politician. According to Republicans, First Ladies are supposed to just be sexy lamps. Other female candidates currently in the running were never First Ladies, so they don't had years and years of smear campaign built up.
Except Trump, but Trump's the kinda guy who loves to beat a dead horse until he can sniff the glue, so that doesn't really come as a surprise.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historySure but they wouldn’t have been as effective if she hadn’t appeared onto the political scene until she became a senator.
Hillary was a victim of sexism, but the amount of power that sexism had against her was so great because of facts special to her.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's not that they aren't sexist.
It's that it was a specific form of sexism that was uniquely applied to Hillary, the point is that Warren won't have to deal with it.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHillary also had her obvious association with Bill Clinton, which basically doubled the effect.

(basically: If Democrats win, they are slightly favourites to get a majority) and this one
about the chances of Amy McGrath unseating the Evil Turtle (basically: Low but non-negligible at 15-20%)
Uh... Trump hasn't called Warren Pocahontas in a while and no one else has brought it up in.... quite a while that I can recall. However embarrassing it might have been in the moment it's certainly been forgotten by now, so I have no idea what "never live it down" could mean in this context. It certainly hasn't been concentrated on since she started her presidential bid, so I'm not exactly seeing anyone try to hang this over her head. Even Trump seems to have gotten bored with it.

2/ Trump claimed that Americans – "whether you love me or hate me" – have "no choice" but to vote for him in 2020, because the stock market will collapse otherwise. Trump also baselessly accused the media of "doing everything they can to crash the economy because they think that will be bad for me and my re-election." Trump, meanwhile, recently attacked the Federal Reserve, forced Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to label China a "currency manipulator," and delayed tariffs on Chinese imports over concerns they could depress holiday sales. 3/ Trump body shamed one of his supporters at a campaign rally, saying "That guy has got a serious weight problem. Go home, get some exercise!" Frank Dawson, who was wearing a "Trump 2020" shirt, was standing near a group of protesters holding two banners. Trump later called from Air Force One, and left a voice mail message for Dawson, but did not apologize for the insult. (Washington Post / New York Times / Daily Beast)

4/ The House Republican strategy on gun violence is to describe mass shootings as "violence from the left" while downplaying white nationalism, according to a talking points memo recently circulated. According to the Anti-Defamation League, 73% of extremist-related murders are committed by right-wing fanatics and white supremacists. No extremist-related murder in the United States last year was carried out by "the left." (Tampa Bay Times
5/ The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rolled back a nationwide injunction that blocked the Trump administration from denying most asylum claims at the U.S.-Mexico border. The decision will now effectively block most Central Americans who cross into the U.S. – legally or illegally – in New Mexico or Texas from seeking asylum while allowing those who cross the border into California or Arizona to claim asylum. 6/ Trump and his national security advisers are considering a deal with the Taliban for a withdrawal of most U.S. forces from Afghanistan. In exchange, the Taliban would agree to renounce al-Qaeda and to prevent it from activities such as fundraising, recruiting, training and operational planning in areas under Taliban control. An initial withdrawal would include roughly 5,000 of the 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan and end America's longest military engagement abroad. (Washington Post / Wall Street Journal)

She's lived it down just fine. It fell out of the short public attention span a long time ago.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.It hasn't come up much because Trump is to busy disparaging Biden to insult Warren. She's not the biggest threat to him right now. Make no mistake, if Warren gets up in the polls, expect "Pocahontas" to make a comeback.
Sanders on Israel banning Omar and Tlaib: If you're not taking our Congresswomen, then don't take our money.
Indeed, though I doubt it will be any more effective as any of Trump's other inane nicknames.
Damn straight, first Bibi disrespects Obama and now Israel blocks congresswomen from coming over?
When we have a Democratic President our relationship had better become significantly more frosty.

Says the guy who, according to his own words, NEVER exercises because he doesn't want to "waste his limited supply of energy".
Man, I get what comedians mean by "it's almost too easy to mock him", that was effortless.

Just you wait though, once the Democratic candidate has been finalized, we'll see no shortage of Minor Injury Overreaction stories from Russia about them in no time flat.
