Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Isn't Greenland the place whose moniker is a complete flippin' falsehood? Because it's actually covered with ice all over?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position."And you think the people living under an oppressive, brutal authoritarian regime would prefer life under it to liberation?"
As someone who is in fact, living under a oprevise regime, i can feel to have voice heard here.
In one hand, we need and intervention and this Is just a fact, chavismo Is not going to go without a fight and none here in LA Is going to do it, in this case i said Perú already did beyond what it need to do.
On the other Hand i just dont Trust you about it, people kept taking about doing "right"but the track récord Is lacking so far, also this Isnt a video game were you cant do awfull shit and Sort saying "oh well, next Time" specially since some shit you did like abu grab or drone strike it just get pass around, for me this Is just top privilege speaking "we did some tinny binny mistakes here but we can do better next Time" after all, it Will never happen to you.
And with saudí Arabia Is a serious blindspot because they have gond away with tons of shit over and over again, Is something you Will have to deal eventually to put your Monet were your mouth Is.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Yeah, that's the place. The name "Greenland" is a practical joke on the Vikings that continues to haunt high school geography students to this day.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.~unknowing, I did ask people to take the intervention discussion to the appropriate thread.
I had read somewhere that apparently the US Government attempted to buy Greenland from Denmark (yes, Greenland isn't its own country, it's a part of Denmark) after WWII due to having a massive military presence there, for around $100 Million, but the Danish Government turned them down. Unless Trump is going to spend a Trillion, I think the Danish Government would reject them again.
Also, if Trump so desperately wants to make a 51st State, he should just push Congress to make Puerto Rico into the 51st State. Of course he won't, because he hates Hispanics, but he should.
Also, if we're talking about unrealistic US expansion, I think the Baja Peninsula would be a better buy then Greenland.
So apparently there was a Fox News poll recently where Trump loses to every single one of the major democratic candidates.
I find this notable because well, it's a Fox News poll. I guess maybe that means it might not be so reliable, but it's interesting nonetheless. Two things are worth noting: Warren has made an 8% gain compared to the last survey they did, and Harris has the smallest margin to defeat Trump by, so much so that it's within margin of error whereas the others are not.
Speaking of Warren, a poll from Wisconsis has her as the most popular candidate, even beating out Biden.
The survey suggests a very tight presidential race where the democrats are only favored to win by a single percentage point which seems well within margin of error.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the people of Greenland would not be all that thrilled about being bought by the US. There's a strong independence movement there, and they'd be far more insignificant as a US territory than as a part of the Danish crown. They probably wouldn't be excited to suddenly be made part of a country that's far less likely to ever allow them to break free.
As an Icelander, I must say I also feel highly uncomfortable about having a US-owned territory right next door. I mean, we're all inside their sphere of influence anyway, but making it official isn't a pleasant thought.

2/ Trump thinks Lewandowski would be a "fantastic" senator if he ran in New Hampshire. Lewandowski has been reportedly considering a Senate run and is expected to make an appearance at a Trump rally in the state on Thursday. The House Judiciary Committee subpoena came hours after Trump told a local radio station that Lewandowski would make a "great senator," who would be "hard to beat" if he ran against Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat. (New York Times / Washington Post / NBC News / Politico)
3/ hite House officials want to invoke executive privilege to limit or block Lewandowski's testimony despite Lewandowski never working in the administration. The White House previously invoked executive privilege to block Don McGahn, Hope Hicks, and Annie Donaldson – who all held titles in the West Wing – from complying with similar congressional subpoenas. Lewandowski, however, has only informally advised Trump since his work on the 2016 campaign ended. (CNN)
4/ A federal judge rejected the House Judiciary Committee's attempt to link Robert Mueller's grand jury evidence with compelling Don McGahn to testify. The committee contends that the two lawsuits will expedite its decision whether to recommend articles of impeachment against Trump. House General Counsel Douglas Letter argued that the two cases should be paired in front of the judge, because both seek evidence for a potential impeachment and are based on the same set of facts. D.C. federal District Court Chief Judge Beryl Howell ruled that connections between the two suits are "too superficial." (Politico)

5/ Trump retweeted a criminologist who argued that there is no evidence that the United States is experiencing an "epidemic" of mass shootings. At least four people have been killed in a mass shooting, on average, every 47 days since June 17, 2015. (Washington Post)
6/ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blocked Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from visiting Israel after Trump lobbied Israeli leaders to block them from entering the country. Trump tweeted that allowing Omar and Tlaib to enter Israel "would show great weakness," because they're "a disgrace." Omar and Tlaib have been critical of Israel and outspoken about their support for Palestinians and the boycott-Israel movement. Under Israeli law, supporters of the movement can be denied entry. A correctional officer drove a truck into ICE protesters outside a private prison. Some were treated at a hospital, though none were severely injured. The officer was wearing a badge and a uniform and police officers at the protest did not intervene. The driver eventually walked into the prison after guards pepper-sprayed the protesters. Trump administration asked Congress to reauthorize a law that lets the National Security Agency gain access to the logs of Americans' phone and text records. While the program is set to expire in December, the Trump administration is pushing to make gaining access to the logs of Americans' domestic communications permanently within the legal authority of the NSA. The program was indefinitely shut down after technical issues repeatedly caused the NSA to collect more records than it had legal authority to gather. (New York Times)

In 2017, Fox Business host David Asman advised then-Treasury Department spokesman Tony Sayegh about how the administration should pursue tax cuts. Four days later, Asman emailed Sayegh to tell him that a significant portion of a Fox Business show would focus on the administration's tax policies. "You'll like it," Asman said. "Awesome David," Sayegh wrote back. "You're the man." Sayegh is a former Fox News contributor. (Hollywood Reporter)
Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland to aides in meetings, at dinners, and in passing conversations. Trump has reportedly asked advisers whether the U.S. could acquire Greenland, which is a self-ruling part of the Kingdom of Denmark. (Wall Street Journal)

CNN also did an opinion piece on it and even suggested that an alternate name would be for Rosie O'Donnell since Trump hates her too.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

Trump is clearly playing world Monopoly or something..he'd probably try to build hotels there
