Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Cases where qualified immunity is invoked still go to court.
And I think it’s fairly obvious what’s done in an official capacity and what’s not.
As I said earlier, I think that was a bad ruling. Even using the current lax “reasonable knowledge” standard, that shouldn’t have held up.

They should have sent a poet.
Yes, qualified immunity is a legal defense. It has to be identified first.
Fundamentally we’re in agreement here, we’re both saying there’s a reason for qualified immunity to exist but it needs to be curtailed to prevent abuses.

They should have sent a poet.Ex-GOP rep calls Trump an 'unfit con man,' says he's sorry for helping elect him – Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh is calling for a primary challenger to take on President Donald Trump in 2020, as he is reckoning with his past controversial comments and apologizing for his role in helping elect an "unfit con man" to the presidency.

Walsh, now a conservative radio host, said he voted for Trump in 2016, but only because he wasn't Hillary Clinton. Where Trump lost him, Walsh said, was during his press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki last year in which he sided with the Russian strongman over his own intelligence community's assessments of interference in the 2016 election.

So in addition to his recent habit of making rounds on conservative news networks, Bernie Sanders just attacked the Washington Post, Amazon, and Jeff Bezos
.
Sure is Trump in here all of a sudden.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm biased against Sanders. I 100% admit that. I didn't like him back in the 2016 primaries, and I've been very quick to assume the worst ever since we found out that Russia was actually propagandizing for him too, not just Trump. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.
But echoing Trumpist sentiments against popular Trump targets isn't doing anything to ease my paranoia towards the guy who didn't want to sanction Russia for their election meddling.
If I didn't know who said that bit I quoted, I would immediately assume it was another Trump tweet. And that is very concerning to me.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Come to think of it, Trump also doesn't like Amazon or Bezos. Albeit for different reasons.
So yeah, that could totally have been a Trump tweet.
The kicker is that Sanders actually knows that what he said was bullshit meant to get cheap laughs from the crowd.
And say what you will about mainstream media, encouraging people to distrust media is not good for democracy.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI can't say for certain if this is intentional on Sanders' part or not, but from where I'm sitting, it certainly looks like he's manipulating his base - and potentially other voters - into disbelieving any negative coverage of him at all.

i'm tired, my friendI've been in politics for a few years. You know what? Not one reporter has ever asked me, 'Bernie? What are you going to do about the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality?' "
Oh, I dunno Bernie, could it be because it's the one thing you never shut up about? Nobody's interested in what your stance is on income inequality because everyone already knows what your stance is on income inequality, and you never stop talking about it, repeating the same exact points over and over again ad nauseam.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/14/politics/hickenlooper-presidential-campaign/index.html
"John Hickenlooper ends 2020 presidential campaign, nods at potential Senate bid"
What coincidental timing; Mark Sanford, former South Carolina Governor and Congressman (Republican), travels to Iowa and New Hampshire, and will announce in 30 days if he will challenge Donald Trump for the 2020 Republican Nominee
.
Sanford, if he does run, could pose a much more serious threat to Trump then Bill Weld does; Bill Weld is more of the Libertarian Wing of the Republican Party, while Mark Sanford represents the Neo-Con faction, which would have more sway over the Party. If the Economy continues to start heading south, Sanford could do what Pat Buchanan did to Bush Sr; shake up people's confidence in Trump and get them to either stay at home, vote 3rd Party, or vote for the Democratic Candidate (especially if it's Biden).
Sanders is being an ass.
Is corporate media deeply flawed? Yeah, a lot of it is, due to stuff like Wash Po and NY Times publishing crappy conservative op-eds (climate change isn’t real! Here’s why we need less immigrants except rich Europeans no I'm not racist), focusing on stupid or frivolous stories (but her emails!), etc.
Do plenty of journalists dislike Sanders? Yeah, probably; a lot of the prominent ones are Ivy League rich kids and he’s not as personable as Warren.
Is it acceptable for him to “jokingly” question all Wash Po coverage due to their owner? No.

Kentucky sports radio host plans book-length rebuke of Mitch Mc Connell
The book, planned as a political rebuke of the second most powerful Republican in the country, will be published by Simon & Schuster and is expected to be released next summer ahead of the 2020 election.
Jones is a Kentucky native and hosts a popular syndicated radio show. He’s also hosted a television talk show that covers sports and politics in the state and been a frequent critic of Mc Connell for years.
The book — with a working title of “Mitch, Please!” — will be part travelogue and part history of the commonwealth. Jones, along with his co-author Chris Tomlin, plans to travel to each of Kentucky’s 120 counties to make his case: Mc Connell has had a negative impact on the state he’s represented for more than three decades.
Regarding how mistrust of the media can be a bad thing, I have to mention my country that legit believes that Peru is a failed state due to the narratives pushed for populists.
A economist says Peru is a solid economy is interpretated as "LIBTARD JOURNALIST LIE BECAUSE THEY JUST WANT TO KEEP US SUBJUGATED WHILE WE COLLAPSE FOR THE INTEREST OF THE EVIL SUPERPOWERS!!"

Watch me destroying my country

The reason it’s usually most relevant for police is that a police officer may have to hurt someone in the normal course of their duties.
Who decides if the act conducted was in a legitimate legal capacity, if not the United States Court system?
