The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

More like Fox News acts as an equivalent to our media. Our media's been a problem much longer than Fox.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

[up]Come to think of it, the UK was the origin of the Daily Mail (as in the rag that sided with the Nazis at one point) right?

[up]Yup, they had a pro-fascist bent until it became illegal (under war time subversion laws) to print that shit.

They were openly pro-fascist until it became illegal, I’d argue that they never stopped being pro-fascist, they haven’t been open about it at certain points.

That’s before we get into stuff like our press being a big factor in Brexit and the real disgusting stuff like the hacking of a murdered schoolgirl’s voicemail and the deletion of voicemails so as to make the parents think the girl was still alive (so that they’d leave her new voicemails that the ‘reporter’ could listen to and publish). Though that wasn’t the Mail, that was the New of The World (now effectively remade as the Sun on Sunday).

British tabloids are bad.

"Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,'"

In short they wanted the country to be their private club: only rich people can be here.

This is reminding me of Eulmore in Final Fantasy XIV where the city has only rich people while the poor live in shacks surrounding the city. The city has a lottery where the lucky chosen get to live in the city as a free citizen where they get to serve some nobles.

That was also a premise of Fallout 2 I found to be interesting and horrifying.

Vault City is a Crystal Spires and Togas Utopia but it's also a society that practices slavery (or a form of it). It's just that this is the post-apocalypse world and that people are actually willing to give up rights and serve as property because of the security of it.

@Charles Phipps That reminds me of a character I played in a D&D campaign where the party were all slaves who escaped the Drow. My character began to have some desire to go back upon realizing they were desperately hungry and surrounded by hostile wildlife.

Mind you, while not slavery, plenty of people do come to the United States and other countries for backbreaking labor even though they're treated like shit because—again, security and life is better.

I wonder if its why ELYSIUM didn't do well.

It is the ultimate Anti-Trump movie prior to Trump.

https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/2019/08/13/day-936/

    Day 936: Just in case.
1/ Trump delayed imposing tariffs on some Chinese imports until December. Trump told reporters that he delayed tariffs "for the Christmas season" on cellphones, laptop computers, video game consoles, and certain types of footwear and clothing "just in case" there would be a negative impact on shoppers during the holidays. The 10% tariff on $300 billion worth of Chinese imports will be delayed until Dec. 15, instead of taking effect on Sept. 1 as Trump originally announced. The U.S. Trade Representative office said certain products will also be taken off the list based on "health, safety, national security and other factors." Markets rallied on the news. (New York Times / Washington Post / Politico / CNBC / Axios)

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/13/ustr-removes-some-items-from-list-of-new-china-tariffs-citing-health-safety-national-security.html

2/ Trump's tax cuts, reduced regulation, and tariffs have been ineffective at drawing factory investment and jobs from abroad. Instead, Trump's trade policies have pushed factory activity to low-cost Asian countries, like Vietnam. Foreign and domestic business investment briefly accelerated after Trump signed a $1.5 trillion tax-cut package in late 2017, but then slowed. In Trump's first two years in office, companies announced plans to relocate about 145,000 factory jobs to the U.S. However, more than half of those jobs were announced in 2017 – before Trump's tax cuts took effect. (New York Times)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/13/business/economy/donald-trump-jobs-created.html

3/ Trump tried to take credit for the construction of Shell's petrochemicals complex in western Pennsylvania, which will turn the natural gas deposits into plastics. "This would have never happened without me and us," Trump told a crowd of thousands of workers. Shell, however, announced its plans to build the complex in 2012, when Obama was in office. 4/ A coalition of 22 states and seven cities sued to block the Trump administration from easing restrictions on coal-burning power plants, saying the EPA had no basis for weakening the Clean Power Plan that set national limits on carbon dioxide pollution from power plants. The lawsuit argues that the Affordable Clean Energy rule ignores the EPA's responsibility to set limits on greenhouse gases and that the new rule would extend the life of dirty and aging coal-burning plants, increasing pollution instead of curbing it. 5/ The Justice Department moved to decertify the union representing hundreds of U.S. immigration judges. The DOJ filed a petition asking the Federal Labor Relations Authority to review the certification of the National Association of Immigration Judges and determine whether it should be revoked "because the bargaining unit members are management officials under the statutory definition." The NAIJ represents some 440 immigration judges across the country. (NPR)

https://www.npr.org/2019/08/12/750656176/trump-administration-seeks-decertification-of-immigration-judges-union

6/ The acting director of Citizenship and Immigration Services suggested that only immigrants who can "stand on their own two feet" are welcome in the United States. Ken Cuccinelli's comment came after being asked if the words of the poem displayed on the Statue of Liberty's pedestal still remain "part of the American ethos." Cuccinelli replied: "They certainly are. Give me your tired and your poor — who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge." The Trump administration announced a "public charge" regulation yesterday, allowing federal officials to deny green cards to legal immigrants who have received certain public benefits or who are deemed likely to do so in the future. poll/ 72% of Americans say there should be a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants. Only a quarter of respondents said there should be a national law enforcement effort to deport all undocumented immigrants. 54% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents agree that there should be a legal way for undocumented immigrants to remain in the country, but that number is down 5% since March 2017. Plenty of media discuss issues of immigration and wealth disparity. Trump is just all the racism that's existed since the dawn of America made blatantly manifest in a way we thought we'd shut down in the '60s.

The Times says the treaty with the Taliban is almost done.

I'm like 80% sure the reason they're delaying the withdrawal until after 2020 is because they want the option to fuck up the Taliban if they think they can invade while Trump doesn't care.
