Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So did this film get cancelled because of right-wing outrage? That's super ironic given their insistence that Hollywood and the media have an anti-conservative bias. Can't imagine that'll ever change if they themselves force Hollywood to cancel actual movies with a sympathetic eye toward conservatism.
Trump and Fox needed a target for their outrage and "Liberal Elites" In Hollywood is always a favorite one, especially if you assume it's code.
The fact it hit a movie designed to appeal to them doesn't affect either of them.
It does mean the bean counters knew their intended audience wouldn't see it.

It got cancelled because it provoked the response they wanted, that's really all they wanted, attention,I donbt they were ever serious about the film to begin with, think of it as a publicity stunt
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThat's not really the point. Even the biggest studios frown on projects dropping millions of dollars, as it comes out of their bottom line and, more importantly, their investors' bottom lines.
As The Hunger Games Pitch Meeting
shows, we sell films based on the spectacle of horrific violence against underprivileged people with the paper-thin excuse that the violence is "portrayed as bad".
"Kids killing kids super violently..." "It's got to be PG-13, though." "... Kids killing kids offscreen, with lots of shaky cam." "There it is. Now the whole family can enjoy the child murders."
The only reason this particular film is getting dropped is because it happened to coincide with everyone getting mad about yet another set of grisly real-life murders.
I refused to watch The Purge.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The thing with the Republican party, and lets face it a huge chunk of conservative people in America in general is that they protect people accused of sex crimes. I mean, say what you want about Hollywood, but many including people who got lots of help from him in their early careers like Kevin Smith distanced themselves from Harvey Weinsteen, but when Trump is credibly accused of being linked with Jefferey Epstein they refuse to believe it and continue to worship Trump as a God.
The Purge movies are one of my favorite guilty pleasure franchises. But you can skip the first time if you want to watch for the social critique of white nationalist Kill the Poor crypto-religious fascism.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Is it really a "critique" if those white nationalists are still getting off on it?

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Here's a list of antonyms for "surprised"
"Unsurprised" seems to be the best fit. "Expected" and "assumed" work too.
Disgusted, but not surprised"The Purge movies are one of my favorite guilty pleasure franchises. But you can skip the first time if you want to watch for the social critique of white nationalist Kill the Poor crypto-religious fascism."
Satire requires a clarity of purpose and target, lest it be mistaken for and contribute to that which it intends to criticize. The Purge doesn't really have that.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Fuck this administration, fuck this administration, FUCK this goddamned, misbegotten bullshit xenophobic administration!
TL;DR - they're making it harder to LEGALLY immigrate
.
Paired with last week's enforcement raids on food processing plants in Mississippi, Monday's announcement amounts to a concerted effort by the administration to limit legal immigration and crack down on illegal immigration.
The rule means many green card and visa applicants could be turned down if they have low incomes or little education, and have used benefits such as most forms of Medicaid, food stamps, and housing vouchers, because they'd be deemed more likely to need government assistance in the future.
It will encourage "self-reliance and self-sufficiency for those seeking to come to or stay in the United States," said acting US Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ken Cuccinelli, appearing in the White House briefing room. In doing so, though, it'll likely make it harder for low-income immigrants to come to the US.
When asked about whether the rule is unfairly targeting low-income immigrants, Cuccinelli said: "We certainly expect people of any income to be able to stand on their own two feet, so if people are not able to be self-sufficient, than this negative factor is going to bear very heavily against them in a decision about whether they'll be able to become a legal permanent resident. "
Fucking bootstraps bullshit enabled this.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
Wow, that’s classism and racism rolled into one terrible bundle!
Funny “coincidence” that most of the immigrants that won’t be “low income” are European, college-educated, and wealthy.
They really couldn’t be any more transparent. It’s not xenophobia, it’s racism; they don’t care about wealthy whites immigrating, but can’t have those poor brown people coming in. Gag.
Adventurers: homeless people who steal from tombs and kill things.Yeah, I always found that critique to be a little half-handed since it seems to be pandering to the very people it’s supposed to critique.
Getting Dragon's Crown flashbacks here.
"No, see, the sorceress has giant boobs because it's satire! Her boobs are only taking up 80% of her body mass because it's critiquing other games for having hyper sexualized women! ...what? What folder full of porn of her on my desktop? Oh, I, uh, only downloaded those ironically."
Given they're treated as barely human Chaotic Evil orcs and the super-rich as pathetic cowards, I'm not sure how you could be more critqueable. The movies are vicious in their satire and some of the most direct about what kiund of people they loathe.

I made a typo. I edited the post to convey what I really meant to say.
