Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

A new addition to kneeling to the anthem:
American fencer kneels on medal stand during anthem, tweets about Trump and gun control – "My pride ... has been cut short by the multiple shortcomings of the country I hold so dear to my heart," Race Imboden tweeted. "Racism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants, and a president who spreads hate are at the top of a long list."
I think that focus on the deep red states for the statewide elections is a bad call, and would repeat Clinton's mistake of ignoring the light blue and swing states that a Democrat needs to get 270 Electoral Votes.
Now, putting resources into (winnable) red state races is a good call, but the focus has to be on the battles that can be won. The Republican base is downright servile, no matter what the GOP does they turn out in reliable numbers for them, and combined with voter suppression and gerrymandering... resources are in limited supply and can't be spent everywhere.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. The mistake of 2016 was ignoring some states, on some level every state is competitive.
Also when it comes to resources it's worth remembering that there are untapped resources in some states, Beto managed to tap into resources in Texas, sure it's not worth putting a ton of presidential resources into Kansas, but a good senatorial candidate could draw upon some resources that would make the state more competitive and force the GOP to spend money there.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThe other mistake is to assume that you can constrain the Evil Turtle solely through blue states. There aren't enough Republican Senators in blue states for that strategy to work.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMost analysts I listen to prioritize the Midwest, with Pennsylvania being lumped in there as well as the key winnable states for Democrats. Except Ohio, which many of them seem to have written off. Arizona is often considered a secondary target, and the longshots of Texas and Georgia bringing up the rear.
It's not just about time, resources matter as well. Now if it weren't for Comey Hillary would have won, but her margin was to thin to withstand interference from the FBI director, it should have been stronger.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI don’t think this has been mentioned, but the Trump Administration is drafting an Executive Order that could force government regulation of social media.
Effectively, this could possibly allow them to take action against sites they claim are biased against conservatives, which doesn’t sound good.
So, apparently, due to pressure from Trump, bots, and the right,Universal cancels a formerly
upcoming release that adapts the 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game
due to it supposedly "being an attack against conservatives" and being "too soon in the wake of last week's shootings." I can kinda see the latter reasoning, but the former....guh?
It's because the targets of the hunt were called "deplorables" — nevermind the fact that they're the victims and the hunters are the bad guys of the movie. It has people shooting "deplorables" for sport, so obviously it's a movie about how people should go out and start murdering conservatives, as liberals are well known for advocating.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Probably for the best. What an utterly idiotic idea.
The original story was about a couple of New York city boys being hunted by a crazed aristocrat in the Caribbean. If you really want to see a screen adaptation, or the closest thing to one, just watch Deliverance.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."That's what the trailer implied by using the term "deplorables". The fact they're hunted by a multi-ethnic team including a Latina and a black woman didn't help (and the hunted are all white folk). For what it's worth it's possible this was just a marketing stunt and the film itself didn't reflect it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."This is Trump's tweet that got the movie yanked:
"The movie coming out is made in order to inflame and cause chaos. They create their own violence, and then try to blame others. They are the true Racists, and are very bad for our Country!"
Apparently he was reacting to criticism of the movie he saw on Fox News.
Vox points out
that the film's pedigree "(super-producer Jason Blum, of Get Out and The Purge fame; director Craig Zobel, whose Compliance is one of the best recent movies about what makes fascism so hard to resist; writers Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse, who paired with Zobel for the fantastic Leftovers episode "International Assassin")" indicates there is probably some sort of third act twist that flies in the face of the "Liberals hunting MAG As" advertising.
And "is" rather than "was" because odds are strong it's just being delayed rather than pulled entirely.

If Republicans have a hard time in Alaska in 2020, it's probably in part due to our governor fucking us over en masse, cutting programs like senior benefits, homeless assistance programs, and massive cuts to the University of Anchorage. Which, by the by, is also a large contributor in the study of climate change.
Do not obey in advance.
