Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well yeah, I can understand if somebody has a problem with platforming Alt-Righters, but thats something to criticize Joe for.
Attacking Sanders for appearing with a non-alt right guy who occasionally platforms Alt-Right guys is some twice-around-the-corner guilt by association stuff.

I didn't think he was associating himself with Fox or Bill O'Reilly, but going onto their platform to explain his views to them and their audience. That's how I view left-wingers, including Senator Sanders, going on Joe Rogan's show.

Except Jon Stewart isn't a politician running for President. It's a somewhat different standard.
That right there is basically you admitting you've got a limit as to what is an acceptable platform for a Democratic Party Presidential candidate to be on. To you, a "real" alt-right platform would be beyond the pale.
That's subjective though. To some us, something like FOX News — a blatantly rightwing propaganda network — is already too much. As is something like Joe Rogan's podcast.
Also — exactly how many alt-righters can a platform allow to peddle their toxic views and still not be a "real" alt-right platform in your book?
And let's not forget that this is Bernie Sanders we're talking about. He's already got some baggage when it comes dealing with issues outside of his economic stuff. This sort of thing does not help at all.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAs long as the host himself isn't Alt-Right.
Like I said, I get why somebody would be against it, I myself also wouldn't do it, but having debates with people like this doesn't make him one of them.
I mean, take Contrapoints for example, she's had tons of debates with extreme right-wingers.

One, again, not running for president.
Two, if you're friends with someone who's friends with a bunch of alt-right types, people would still be justified for looking at you funny, because, A) why does your friend hang out with alt-righters despite not being alt-right, and B) why are you hanging out with someone with alt-right friends?

i'm tired, my friendWhat the hell does "political money from Twitter" mean?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, I see no downside to Republicans refusing to advertise on one of the internet's biggest social media platforms.
Can we offend them into leaving Facebook too?

Listen, I don't care what your political affiliation is, you just don't do this.
@ M84 I didn't say they are exactly the same, it was just the first comparison that came to mind, as Contra gets a lot of flak for merely debating right-wingers too.
@Physical I....honestly, I don't have a retort for that. I mean, I have a fairly conservative friend too, but yeah. Platforming is one thing, but why somebody would be personal friends with somebody as crazy as Alex Jones without being that crazy himself, that I don't get either.

Biden said, and I quote, "poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids". Which, uh...is pretty damn racist. And he did it at a town hall with the Asian and Latino Coalition.
YIKES.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -Fighteer

From the clips I've seen, yes - but Rogan doesn't usually argue with his guests so much, he tends to approach things with an open mind (or give that impression) and just chat - the format is more about Joe trying to understand the other person's viewpoint/argument rather than one side or the other trying to win the other over.
It's kinda why people have a problem with him inviting alt-right reactionaries on the show, he (for the most part) gives them all the space they need to explain their awful views.
