Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Better to have a dozen grassroots assholes than a single well-organized and extremely powerful league of assholes whose reach and influence stretches nation-wide.
In fact, that's pretty much the exact logic behind anti-monopoly laws.

.
A better way to hit the NRA than gun control legislation (which they'll benefit from in the short term) is to remove their tax exempt status, which is such a ridiculous joke that I have difficulty understanding it.
Then again a LOT of corporations pay zero taxes.
But yes, it's a for-profit entity and needs to be treated as such.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I cannot even fathom the logic behind corporate tax-exemption in the first place, let alone for the NRA.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm sorry for hijacking the thread for this, but I really, really need to get it off my chest:
I don't feel safe at all in my own country.
I'm a queer woman, 2 of the many groups of people the alt-right hate. In the past few years I've become afraid of white men I don't know out of fear that they might hold far-right beliefs and potentially try to harm me, physically or verbally. I turned 18 several days after the 2016 election, which in my opinion was the absolute worst time for me to reach adulthood, so now that I'm out on my own I'm even more anxious about this happening to me.
I have severe generalized anxiety disorder. I've been able to manage it well with a combination of medication and therapy, but even that has done nothing to make me less distrustful of white male strangers. With far-right terrorism skyrocketing after Trump's election, I don't know if I'm even safe in my fairly-liberal small city. They're truly everywhere, physically in our country, and they can be anyone. To me, that makes them scaring than even motherfucking ISIS.
I can't leave the country, either. I'm a college student with not a whole lot of money, not a whole lot of connections, and a family who's paying for my education. I'm trapped. I can vote all I want in local and federal elections, but that isn't stopping the fact that we're facing a terrorism crisis.
I want to feel safe as a US citizen. I want to be able to love who I love and be the woman I was born to be. I want to be able to go through life without automatically being suspicious of strange white men. I don't like being distrustful of people, but with how things are going, it's hard. I just want all of this bullshit to end.
Hey how you doing well I'm doing just fine I lied I'm dying inside
I don't think anyone here would particularly blame you. I'm not a US citizen and not anywhere near in as much danger as you, but ever since the far right won here last year I have also gotten very paranoid about most people around me being blackshirts in disguise. It's a horrible time for politics in many countries with civil rights being eroded.
That being said while you certainly deserve a place to vent, I would strongly suggest visiting the Insecurities and Anxiety thread
in Yack Fest if you ever feel that you need to get something off your chest.
I'm sorry to say that news video I linked to talked about the NRA's tax exempt status.
Here's an article on the current ongoing investigation into the bullshit they pull (like buying mansions for their activities).
What made you think they weren't?

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I have the utmost sympathy for you, but still, or rather exactly because of this, you shouldn't put all white males under scrutiny.
In fact, you being this afraid is exactly what they want. Terrorism thrives on fear. Don't give in to it.

I live in the Bay Area, which is generally safer, I suppose. Very liberal, lots of minorities, low crime. But then I remember that just that Saturday my brother and I were driving down the 101 and we saw a banner advertising the Garlic Festival and were joking about whether we should check it out or not.
It's true what they say. Gun violence is becoming more and more prevalent, and the number of safe spaces where one can truly feel safe are dwindling rapidly.
I mean, sort of. Gun violence is on an overall downward trend, and mass shootings are still the least common kind of gun violence. Realistically, you’re more likely to be randomly killed by a dog on the street than randomly shot on the street.
Of course, we’ve put laws in place to prevent random dog killings. We haven’t done the same for guns.
They should have sent a poet.I guess it's more the nature of it? Overall gun violence is trending down, but mass shootings are still disturbingly high. And for more "normal" gun violence, you can take steps to avoid it. Generally steering clear of dangerous neighborhoods, having decent home security, stuff like that. But mass shootings can happen almost anywhere and without warning.
Doesn't help that recently the gun store a few miles from where I live had a break-in where someone rammed a truck into the store after hours and made off with everything they could. Not exactly conducive to peace of mind.

It’s the same sort of effect terrorism has. Realistically you aren’t likely to be killed in a terrorist attack at all, but the more coverage of terrorist attacks you watch the more likely you think it is.
Mass shootings are similar. Statistically it’s almost certain those stolen guns will be sold for cash.
I’ll also point out that nobody really knows whether mass shootings are increasing or decreasing because nobody can really agree on a definition of the term.
