Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Reposting from prior page:
ICE kidnapped 680 undocumented workers in Mississippi, leaving their children behind.
An immigrant rights group
summed it up well:
Trump’s war on immigrants is escalating.
Days after the deadly attack on Latinos in El Paso, hours before ‘offering condolences’ to the people he helped target, Trump gave the OK to carry out the largest single-state raid in our nation’s history. [1/x]
Today, that war shattered nearly 700 families, more than 700 lives.
It’s no coincidence that the raids took place across 7 sites in areas that are hard to reach, where there is little to no infrastructure in place to help deal with the aftermath. [2/x]
> If I were to apply for an American citizenship, which state could benefit from my vote the most? I want the best chances of getting an important swing state to vote blue.
Applying for American citizenship so you vote in their elections is an interesting strategy, though given how long it takes the election might be over before your granted citizenship
As for what state would benefit the most? The answer is any really
have a listen and have a link to my discord server~Septimus Heap Thank you for your argument.

Trump is a New Yorker who has supported Clinton and other Democrats in the past.
That he wouldn't actually mind more liberal policies is/was a point of concern for many Republicans. That and Trump doesn't actually have political beliefs, just stances that are convenient. I wouldn't be surprised if he tosses some of his allies out the window once he doesn't need to win reelection. Trump is the worst sort of person who has all the moral fiber of a puddle of water. Not that you needed me to tell you that.

There are people who disagree that the Earth is round.
Just because someone somewhere thinks something is true doesn't mean they need an advocate.
The ugliest truth about Trump is that he's not the worst evil that the Conservative Right has in play. He's only the most visible.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Could we maybe talk about the people being permanently traumatized or killed rather than keep going in circles about Trump? Like. It doesn’t matter exactly why he does what he does, he’s not doing this alone, and the victims are the people who matter.
Children devastated by ICE rounding up their parents in massive Mississippi raids last night.
Volunteers set up a makeshift shelter for the children at a local gym, WJTV’s Alex Love reported. There was food, “but most children are still devastated and crying for their parents and can’t eat,” Love said on Twitter.

There is no good answer for what to do with those Children. There are roughly four options, none of them are goid
1. Leave them there
2. Put them with their parents
3. Put them in foster care
4. Put them in their own holding facility
Perhaps instead of criminalizing wanting to build a life here, we should welcome them and make it easy for them to not worry about getting arrested and start paying taxes. I fully believe that the vast majority of immigrants are net positives and heavily out weigh the ones that aren't.

I highly doubt you could get a murder charge to stick there, much less accessory to murder. Maybe you could get negligence on the part of the officials who oversaw the critical parts of the deportation process, if it could be proven that his death was the result of a mistake by the US, but that would just be low level guys, and it’s quite possible even that wouldn’t stick.

They should have sent a poet. That right there is the good answer for what to do with these children.
The correct answer to "Where should we put children after tearing their parents away from them" is to not be tearing parents away from children just for existing.
Problems we create are never unsolvable. The solution is to stop creating the problem.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Here's something dumb: Undocumented immigrants already pay taxes. In fact they categorically pay more in taxes than they receive back in benefits.
Also, regarding Jimmy Aldaoud's case:
What's arguably extra terrible here is that he was a Chaldean Christian. Born in Greece. Fucking American Conservatives can't even Islamophobe right.
Angry gets shit done.Perhaps instead of criminalizing wanting to build a life here, we should welcome them and make it easy for them to not worry about getting arrested and start paying taxes. I fully believe that the vast majority of immigrants are net positives and heavily out weigh the ones that aren't.
Entirely right - the problem is that we've got a President whose campaign was built on the "Evil Foreigner" trope, and his chief advisor for immigration policy, Stephen Miller, is virulently xenophobic, to the point that he suggested allowing NO refugees into the US next year
, and has proposed a "merit-based" immigration standard that's so stringent that most people would be denied a chance to APPLY
, let alone actually enter.
And the cruelest irony is that Trump's grandfather, Friedrich
, is a huge example of both Chain Migration (came to live with his sister), which is something Trump railed against. As for Stephen Miller? His grandparents were Russian refugees escaping the anti-Jewish pogroms of the time
, and both of these assholes are blatantly of the "Fuck you, got mine!" mentality.
What a tragic story.

Here's the information on the NRA's present situation.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Christ. Remind me what their sterling logic is for all these deportations? Is it still because they believe that immigrants are all in on some nefarious scheme to come over and displace American culture while stealing all their money for drug habits/terrorist plots/cheap houmous, and this is indoctrinated in so hard that even toddlers who've never set foot in their supposed home country are in on it, too?
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!

Yeah, I'd say it's a coin flip if Trump ends up changing his mind on gun legislation. He doesn't care about guns or the NRA one way or the other, so it'll be down to what his advisers and Fox News say. Though honestly between Mitch and Trump wanting to use it as a political football I don't see anything getting passed anyway
