Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pretty sure it was also backed by Russian trolls, trying to make it look like a more popular idea than it actually was.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Which probably weakens any legitimate sentiments towards secession by association.

Amongst vocal minorities, yes.
At this point, secession has no chance of ever being a serious movement in the foreseeable future.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang"Team Mitch", Mitch McConnel's Twitter handle for his 2020 Campaign, has been suspended from Twitter
after posting a profanity-laced video involving people protesting outside of his home in Kentucky.
I guess Twitter had enough of McConnel's Bull these past couple of days, and this was the straw that broke the camels back. This certainly won't help him next year.
If we manage to unseat Mc Connel it'd be so amazing.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThey got banned for that? The same platform that lets #Massacre Mitch trend banned them for that? Like I've been trying to stay away from Bias in news and platforms, but you have got to be kidding me.

... Massacre Mitch was blatantly, obviously referring to Mitch ALLOWING massacres.
Like Moscow Mitch referring to Mitch allowing Moscow/Russia to interfere with our elections.
Don’t carry water for white supremacist trolls.
It takes a really dishonest person to see something referring to Mc Connell as “Massacre Mitch” (as in, a nickname, just like people were calling him “Moscow Mitch” last week — “massacre” being used as a noun) and conclude that it’s actually “massacre” as a verb and is a threat.
They're *really* trying to make this happen.
He 100% knows that people saying "Massacre Mitch" were using the word "massacre" as a noun, as part of a nickname and not as a verb and a call to action, but if Mikey didn't have straw men to fight, he wouldn't have anything at all.
But here's how that always goes:
1. Right-wingers purposely misread a tweet to stir up fake outrage
2. When the person who sent the tweet clarifies exactly what they meant, some dope posts the "sick backpedal!" GIF, another one will post a hole being dug, etc.
They're children
The idea that Twitter of all platforms is biased against Republicans is pretty ridiculous. Heck, they've already more or less admitted that one reason they don't crack down harder on hate speech is because it'd result in a lot of Republicans being banned.

Disgusted, but not surprised
x4 I think it's less this video specifically and more everything that "Team Mitch" has done this week that this is the final straw for them; yes, I do agree that this video shouldn't have gotten them banned, but considering the Opponent Graves and AOC Groping Pictures they posted this week (either of which should have gotten him banned instead of this), it's clear that McConnel's Campaign was going overboard, and something sooner or later was going to get them banned. It just turned out it was this relatively minor video.
x2 Plus this; Massacre Mitch does not mean "Kill Mitch", it's a nickname about how Mitch is allowing people to die both through direct action and inaction.

I never even thought for a second that the hashtag implied a death threat because it was so obvious that it was in the context of the shooting sprees in the country of the last few years, plus all the other horrible things he enables or openly supports.
The most you can argue is that they could have gone with a more unambiguous hashtag but even that strikes me as a disingenuous argument.
Frankly, Murderin' Mitch would have communicated the point a bit better. I kind of-sort of was misled as well, although I found the misconception amusing.

Secession is a fairly common agenda for a lot of states. Texas is the big one, but there have been calls for California’s secession for ages. Give it a few years, it’ll be back.
