Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You know, I vaguely remember Trump getting pissed at the reaction to him walking back his initial comments on Charlottesville and swearing to never do it again because it made him look weak. It thus surprises me that his first statement on the shooting was to condemn racism; I would've expected him to either lay the blame entirely on the left (he's no stranger to blatantly lying in defiance of basic logic) or just resort to pseudo-bothsiding to appear "reasonable".

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Orange County, longtime GOP stronghold, now has more registered Democrats than Republicans Orange County, which nurtured Ronald Reagan’s conservatism and is the resting place of Richard Nixon, is now home to 547,458 registered Democrats

I think he'll be fine with it as long as it is not in public. Charlottesville required him to go to the lectern a few times to try and correct the record - that was the weakness. As long as he perceives that the statements he makes from the pulpit are not due to external pressure then there is no weakness. The first statement is the exception: at times of national crisis the President always responds so that one doesn't count. But after that, if Trump feels he has to go back to the nation and make another statement on this topic due to the overwhelming negative press then that is weakness.
Someone wrote Trump's speech for him this time. You can always tell when he's reciting his own words because he's really enthusiastic and energized about it.
His condemnation of white supremacy, while a step above his reaction to the Charlottesville riot, reeked of fakeness. He was very slow and very deliberate with the words he spoke. For most Presidents, careful and calculated statements would be normal. But for Trump, it's a sure sign that he's just reciting remarks someone handed to him.

It's obvious they weren't his words. I enjoyed Seth Meyers take - "Teleprompter urges unity while old man watches"
The question however was about if Trump would see this statement as a weak statement, given what happened in Charlottlesville. Marq's view is that as Trump is a racist any statement which runs counter to that view is a weak statement in Trump's eyes, and therefore one he does not want to make. My view is that Trump doesn't care what the statement is as long as he feels in control. So as long as he doesn't have to make a second statement, he won't care.

Guys, how can you question the sincerity of his hate condemnation of a man who 9 minutes ago at the time of this posting, he tweeted this:
"Watching Sleepy Joe Biden making a speech. Sooo Boring! The Lame Stream Media will die in the ratings and clicks with this guy. It will be over for them, not to mention the fact that our Country will do poorly with him. It will be one big crash, but at least China will be happy!"
He's totally sincere and wasn't reading off a teleprompter.
My lady AOC tweeted about how the media is still giving Trump major passes on ridiculous bullshit.

Orange County, California, a traditional GOP stronghold (that the Dems almost totally toppled in 2018), now has more registered Democrats than Republicans.
https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/07/politics/orange-county-california-democrats-republicans/index.html
Analysts on both sides see this as just one part of a suburban shift against the GOP, one that has been going on for over a decade but is being hastened by Trump.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. You know what I want to happen right now? Trump starts one of his hate-filled rants at a rally, only to suddenly flub his words as he briefly chokes on his own spit. He tries to continue after recovering, only to choke again in the same manner when he starts the hate-spewing. And again. And again. And again. Until he finally gives up and says a much more brief and straightforward summary of his points before storming off to throw a tantrum in private over how the Democrats must've spiked his water with something.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. We have a perfectly serviceable thread on California matters
, for what it's worth.
Speaking of California, I haven't heard about that "secretly" Russian-backed secessionist movement/group/proposal/whateveritwas for quite a while. Did it quietly die out?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

Conversation is shifting from discussion of topic to discussion of specific tropers.
Maybe don't?
