Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

...to wrestle his phone away from his handlers.
All those Big Macs must be having an impact on his dexterity.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.The calls of "Look, that mass shooter was a LEFT-WINGER" from the right in relation to the Dayton shooter in order to create a false equivalency of both sides just plain ignore that the Dayton had no political motive that anyone can confirm, while the El Paso shooter is linked to a racist manifesto posted on 8chan.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."![]()
It's pretty sad that the Right is so desperate to blame something on the Left that all they're taking from the Dayton shooter is that he had vaguely leftists beliefs. Alright, maybe he wasn't another White Nationalist terrorist but in that case this shooting was almost certainly not political at all. Just a random act.
It's kind of inappropriate to respond to Trump trying to blame this tragedy on Warren, Sanders, and Antifa by going "I'm sure the Democratic Party would do the same thing in his shoes".
You're insinuating that they are no better than Trump. This is textbook "bothsiding".
And I'm saying this as someone who can't stand Sanders and is one of the only people in this thread who doesn't fully trust Warren.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'll also note that the Dayton shooter was also known as a gun lover, raging misogynist and despite his leftist is online posts, didn't target an ICE facility or Republican gathering.
Trump repeatedly says Mexicans are rapists and killers who are invading and laughs when his supporters suggest shooting them. Warren and Sanders' most angry extreme statements have been that rich people should pay more taxes.
Remember all those Warren rallies where she attacked minorities, the disadvatanged, and anyone who didn't like her while her audience chanted calls for violence and she did nothing to deter it?
Seriously, wtf. Even if Dayton was a leftist shooter, there's still the issue of yet another young, white male shooting people due to imagine sleights.
Edit edit: And barring that, there's still been far more right wing terrorism in the country than left wing. So stop with the both sidesings, Soban

No, you were basically stating that if the Dayton shooter had tenuous links to the GOP then Sanders or Warren would be tweeting about it just like Trump is.
I'm not the only poster who has noticed this tendency to bothside things. Heck, I'm not even the first one to bring it up.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThere's a massive difference between being a shooter who directly cites political/racial/culture-war talking points and conspiracy theories in their written manifesto for the shootings and being a shooter that has expressed political opinions online.
The Dayton shooter was a sick dude who was obsessed with death, mass shootings, and many of his old classmates have come forward to say they aren't surprised this happened, he wasn't right in the head. There's no link between the fact he held left-wing views and his shootings. Same can't be said for the mass shootings that can be considered acts of far-right domestic terrorism.

I don't think I mentioned Sanders or Warren and if not just like, but in the same direction but yhea. And this is something that I think should be pretty obvious.
This was about Trump tweeting about the shooter being a fan of Sanders and Warren. You responded by claiming that that the same thing would have happened in the other direction if the Dayton shooter posted stuff sympathetic to the Republicans.
Much as I don't particularly like Sanders or Warren, I can't see them doing anything like that.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's a combination of bothsiding and Hitler Ate Sugar.
The El Paso shooter left a manifesto saying "I murdered minorities because I hate minorities and I love Trump."
The Dayton shooter was a leftist with no known meaning behind his actions. He had ideologies, but there's no clear connection between them and his action.
It's precisely the "the suspect played video games, thus video games caused this" mentality of the past.
