There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Flamethrowers are like that because they actually are quite useful to civilians, there often used as an agricultural tool to reduce fields after harvest, since ash is very fertile.
They are often tractor mounted
◊, but traditional ones are used as well... its just safer and more controllable then starting a fire in the field and hoping it doesn't spread.

2/ The Trump campaign paid for more than 2,000 Facebook ads this year that included the word "invasion" in relation to immigration. The campaign has spent roughly $1.25 million on Facebook ads about immigration since late March. The campaign spent nearly $5.6 million on Facebook ads overall during that same period. "We have an INVASION!" many of the ads say in large letters. "It's CRITICAL that we STOP THE INVASION." While there is no evidence that Trump's campaign messaging influenced the shooter in the white supremacist terrorist attack that left 22 people dead and dozens injured in El Paso, the shooter declared in his manifesto that "this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." (Media Matters / New York Times / The Guardian / USA Today / VICE News)
📌 Day 788: Mick Mulvaney: Trump "is not a white supremacist." The acting chief of staff went on to say it was "absurd" to draw a connection between Trump's statements about immigration and the acts of a shooter who embraced both white nationalism and Trump. Last week Trump called undocumented immigrants coming to U.S. an "invasion" as he vetoed a congressional resolution that would block his declaration of a national emergency at the U.S. border with Mexico. 📌 Day 928: Trump dismissed accusations that his own racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric has stoked racial hatred and helped to provoke would-be mass shooters. Instead, Trump tweeted – without evidence – that the news media is contributing "greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years." The manifesto of the shooter in Texas, however, echoes the same kind of anti-immigrant language that Trump has used at his rallies over the years, specifically stating that "this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." Portions of the 2,300-word essay, titled "The Inconvenient Truth," closely mirror Trump's rhetoric demonizing undocumented immigrants as "thugs" and "animals," and decrying Latino immigration as "an invasion of our country." 3/ The FBI opened a domestic terrorism investigation into the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting that left three people dead and 13 wounded after officials discovered the gunman had a list of other potential targets. The FBI special agent in charge said they also "uncovered evidence that the shooter was exploring violent ideologies." (Los Angeles Times / San Francisco Chronicle)
4/ Mitch Mc Connell complained that protesters outside his home were making "serious calls to violence" over his refusal to allow the Senate to consider bills passed by the House to strengthen background checks for gun sales. The protest followed the mass shootings over the weekend in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, that left 31 people dead. Louisville metro police confirmed that the group outside Mc Connell's residence were "protesting peacefully." Mc Connell's campaign, however, characterized the group of 20 to 30 people as "an angry left-wing mob" making threats and shouting profanities. (Washington Post / New York Post)

📌 Day 928: Democrats called on Mitch Mc Connell to cancel the Senate's August recess so they can take up gun control legislation. The bill would create new background check requirements for gun transfers between unlicensed individuals. It passed the House in February 240-190. (NBC News)
5/ Mc Connell's campaign tweeted a photo of mock tombstones with the names of his political opponents, Democratic initiates, and nominees he's blocked, with the caption: "The Grim Reaper of Socialism." The photo shows five gravestones flanked by two "Team Mitch" signs. One tombstones reads "R.I.P Amy Mc Grath, November 3rd, 2020," a reference to his Democratic opponent in the 2020 Kentucky Senate race and the date of the general election. Others include a Judge Merrick Garland tombstone, the Green New Deal, "Socialism," and Alison Lundergan Grimes, the 2014 Democratic challenger who Mc Connell defeated that year.(Politico / Washington Post)

6/ Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confronted Mc Connell about a photo of seven high school men in "Team Mitch" shirts "groping & choking" a cardboard cutout of her. The photo, which has since been deleted, was posted to Instagram with the caption: "break me off a piece of that." Ocasio-Cortez retweeted the photo to Mc Connell, asking to clarify if Mc Connell was "paying for young men to practice groping & choking members of Congress w/ your payroll, or is this just the standard culture of #Team Mitch?" The Mc Connell campaign said that it "in no way condones" the photo and that "these young men are not campaign staff, they are high schoolers." While the photo was taken during a "non-school" event, some of the men were in a photo shared by the Mc Connell campaign's Instagram account, holding large posters of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. The Mc Connell campaign then attacked "the far-left and the media" for writing about the incident and using the image to "demonize, stereotype, and publicly castigate every young person who dares to get involved with Republican politics." (NBC News / Washington Post / Daily Beast)
Trump and the Republican National Committee filed a pair of lawsuits challenging a new law in California requiring presidential candidates to release five years of tax returns in order to be placed on the state primary ballot in 2020. The RNC called the law a "naked political attack against the sitting president of the United States." Trump's lawyer William Consovoy argued that the new law adds an "unconstitutional qualification" to the set of qualifications for the presidency as defined in the Constitution and violates the First Amendment. The Constitution requires that you be a natural born citizen, at least 35 or older, and be a U.S. resident for at least 14 years. (New York Times / CNN / Axios)

The U.S. Ambassador to Russia submitted his resignation and plans to move back home to Utah. Jon Huntsman resignation is effective October 3rd and there is speculation that he is planning to run for governor of Utah. (Salt Lake Tribune / CNN)

Trump – without evidence – accused Google of "very illegal" acts to subvert his 2016 presidential campaign and that he'll be watching the company "very closely" ahead of the 2020 election. Trump's tweets came after a former Google engineer appeared on "Fox & Friends." A Google spokesperson described the employee, who was fired from in June 2018, as a "disgruntled former employee." Sue on what grounds?
You can't sue someone just for being an asshole.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I don't think that this interpretation could be considered plausible under even the most generous interpretation of the word "threat". Especially since all the other tombstones are of legislation.
If you want to stop the Evil Turtle, it has to be through other means.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynmanhttps://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/aug/06/8chan-owner-statement-jim-watkins
8chan's current owner Jim Watkins issued a statement that is a pretty blatant attempt to downplay his websites obvious involvement with the El Paso shooting, while also blaming Instagram (The guy's Insta hasn't been used in a year, but good try) and whining about Cloudflare taking his site away. I haven't seen the actual video but it sounds like a shameless appeal to "patriots." It's kinda like an admission of guilt, he knows he's screwed and can't keep denying the truth any longer so he's just going full Army veteran man to get sympathy.

Oh, and he's also been summoned to defend himself at The House. Or he would be if anyone knew where he actually lived. I wonder how long the internet tactic of simply not replying will protect him.
On a related note:
NY Times: ‘Shut the Site Down,’ Says the Creator of 8chan, a Megaphone for Gunmen
Even the original founder of 8chan Fredrick Brennan wants the site gone.
Some more information on the attempt to keep 8chan off mainstream internet services.
Basically they keep getting cut off and some major companies have lost major business partners over it.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It's toxic in every sense of the word. Any business person with a lick of sense knows that being even remotely associated with a site connected to mass murders is pretty much begging for bankruptcy. Especially if their support of the site enables more mass murders.
The only people who would support 8chan and other awful sites like it are terrible business people, terrible human beings, or both. And those don't tend to last very long since no business exists in a vacuum.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf only THQ Nordic would get hurt enough to kick off the higher ups that did the AMA on 8chan.
Highly unlikely since I think its the pet project of its rich owner.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Joaquin Castro tweeted the names of top Trump donors. The GO Pers trying to make it seem as if Castro doxxed these donors are being disingenuous. As Castro pointed out, he didn't tweet any private info like their home addresses or phone numbers. Just public record stuff.
Disgusted, but not surprisedYup. Just like Andrew Anglin, the scumbag in charge of the Dailystormer, is residing somewhere outside of the US (many think, ironically, Nigeria).
Which is why any lawful action against these people (Angline has been sentenced to pay several millions of dollars in lawsuits, f.e.) are completely useless, sadly.
Certified: 48.0% West Asian, 6.5% South Asian, 15.8% North/West European, 15.7% English, 7.4% Balkan, 6.6% ScandinavianSo with the shootings and Trump's call unity, how is he handling this on Twitter, you may ask:
"Beto (phony name to indicate Hispanic heritage) O’Rourke, who is embarrassed by my last visit to the Great State of Texas, where I trounced him, and is now even more embarrassed by polling at 1% in the Democrat Primary, should respect the victims & law enforcement - & be quiet!"
"“Trump Urges Unity Vs. Racism,” was the correct description in the first headline by the Failing New York Times, but it was quickly changed to, “Assailing Hate But Not Guns,” after the Radical Left Democrats went absolutely CRAZY! Fake News - That’s what we’re up against..."
"“Meanwhile, the Dayton, Ohio, shooter had a history of supporting political figures like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and ANTIFA.” @OANN I hope other news outlets will report this as opposed to Fake News. Thank you!"
Man, what a uniter!!!!

@Physical Stamina: Not really. This is actually a case where "criminals will break the law anyways" is actually a valid argument. Once they have a gun, there isn't much stopping it from being used.
Also, in general, with gun legislation focusing on so-called "assault weapons", the problem (well, one problem, there's several) is that you can't just look at what weapons are useful or not useful to civilians. You also need to look at what guns are useful to criminals. For example, flamethrowers are perfectly legal in the US. You don't even need a permit in most states. However, very few crimes are committed with them.
