Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And nothing of value was lost.
Don't you think if America was as progressive as this forum, Republicans would have been made irrelevant like long, long, LONG ago?
Yeah, we have to remind ourselves from time to time that the Usonians among us aren't really representative of the USA or even the Democratic voter base as a whole.
Disgusted, but not surprisedSpeaking of Biden, part of the reason he's doing well likely has to do with his connection to Obama.
It really cannot be overstated how well-liked Obama is.
Amongst African-American Democrats, 99% hold a favorable view of him with 1% undecided.

El Paso, Texas: 22 people were killed and 26 others injured. The shooter used an assault-style rifle. (CNN / New York Times / NBC News)
2/ Hours earlier, Trump called for "strong background checks" and suggested "marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform." Trump made a similar call to improve background checks after a shooting last year in Florida. Trump, however, threatened to veto a gun control bill that passed the House with bipartisan support in February that would require universal background checks. The bill has not been considered by the Senate, which is on recess until September. (CNN / New York Times)
3/ Trump dismissed accusations that his own racist and anti-immigrant rhetoric has stoked racial hatred and helped to provoke would-be mass shooters. Instead, Trump tweeted – without evidence – that the news media is contributing "greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years." The manifesto of the shooter in Texas, however, echoes the same kind of anti-immigrant language that Trump has used at his rallies over the years, specifically stating that "this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas." Portions of the 2,300-word essay, titled "The Inconvenient Truth," closely mirror Trump's rhetoric demonizing undocumented immigrants as "thugs" and "animals," and decrying Latino immigration as "an invasion of our country." 4/ Democrats called on Mitch Mc Connell to cancel the Senate's August recess so they can take up gun control legislation. The bill would create new background check requirements for gun transfers between unlicensed individuals. It passed the House in February 240-190. (NBC News)

5/ FBI Director Christopher Wray ordered the agency to conduct a new threat assessment in order to identify and stop potential future mass shootings. A command group in Washington, D.C. will oversee the effort, during which FBI field offices will actively work to identify threats that are similar to the attacks last week at a food festival and over the weekend in Texas and Ohio. In recent congressional testimony, senior FBI officials said they were conducting about 850 domestic terrorism investigations — down from a year earlier, when there were roughly 1,000. Wall Street suffered its worst day of 2019 as China answered Trump's threat to add 10% tariffs on another $300 billion in Chinese imports by allowing its currency to slide to an 11-year low against the dollar. Trump accused China of manipulating its currency. The Dow, S&P, and Nasdaq fell 2.9%, 3%, and 3.5%, respectively. (CNBC / Washington Post / New York Times / Bloomberg / Wall Street Journal)

The Trump "superfan" who sent homemade pipe bombs to Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other Democrats was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Prosecutors had called for a life sentence for Cesar Sayoc, while his defense lawyers pushed for a 10-year sentence, saying that at the time of his arrest, Sayoc was allegedly suffering from an untreated mental illness, compounded by excessive steroid use, and that he had become increasingly obsessive, isolated and paranoid. "We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Yeah, in all their crooning about how "good" this is for their movement, they've completely neglected one possibility - that the rest of us will get so sick of these rampaging, murderous cretins that they lose their gathering places and get cracked down on.
And the longer Trump and the GOP stand by these life long losers, the worse they're gonna be doing electorally.

x4 I'm sure they'll stack up pretty evenly once we are awaken from this haze and start to think rationally again. The administration is a circus, if I didn't know all of this were happening I'd think it was a tv show gone wild.
I'm not a big follower of Presidential History but in 20 years, I have to imagine Trump will go down as one of the most unpopular and/or controversial presidents in history. The things he's done, been accused of and outright said on Twitter would've been unimaginable like 10 years ago. Especially the fact that he seems to be untouchable. Even Nixon and Clinton as popular as they were went down after their controversies, but it'd take an act of God for old Donny to actually be removed (step down, or impeached) from office.

Just Having FunWell this is lovely - a group of McConnell volunteers (young white men sporting "Team Mitch" shirts)
took a pic of them groping and choking a cutout of Ocasio-Cortez.
I really don't think that's the sole reason they hold Obama in such esteem.
Beyond being the first black President he was just a good President, Trump's behavior as Presidency really throws that into sharp relief.
I think it makes perfect sense that people would hold Obama in high esteem, especially if they're African-American.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang@RJ-19-CLOVIS-93 The problem with Trump is that he's got a Controversy-Proof Image. Anyone who doesn't already want him gone is okay with whatever he does.
They'll have to find his heart, first. I think Trump keeps it in a box in his desk, along with McConnell's dick.
(Obviously, nobody should be advocating violence, on either side.)

Looks like 8chan, The Daily Stormer and Gab have all been shut down for now because Epik, the company that provided hosting and DDoS protection for the later two and the former was moving to, rented out servers from another company, Voxility, and they pulled the plug.
Also, it seems Tucows, 8chan's domain name registrar has now decided not to provide services to them anymore.
