Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If by memes you mean the archetypical kind that mostly consists of your typical image macro and a pithy saying then I agree that they're abysmal, but memes encompass any kind of humor or in-joke that gets borne across multiple people beyond a singular and tightly secluded social circle. I'm not about to give up "On your left!" anytime soon.
Trump is musing aloud on the possibility of using these white supremacist murders as incentive to pass more racist policies.
From the hideous bowels of Trump's Twitter account:
....this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!
Yep. That's right. In the wake of these tragedies, Trump wants to write gun control policies and attach harsher immigration laws to those policies as riders.
I would call it tone-deaf if he wasn't already openly racist. He's using racist murders to try and convince us to us buy gun control, at the cost of rights for the same people that his people are trying to murder. Does anyone else get a protection racket vibe here? Because this feels protection racket-y to me. Except with human rights instead of cash.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Confusion: Biden offers sympathy for the ‘tragic events in Houston today and also in Michigan'
...
Sunday was not the first time that Biden mixed up names on the 2020 campaign trail. In May, Biden confused former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who left office in 1990, with then-Prime Minister Theresa May.
...
During a Democratic primary debate last week, Biden misstated his frequent line about eight years of Trump, among other flubs. Biden warned that "eight more years of Trump will change America in a fundamental way," even though Trump is constitutionally limited to one more four-year term after 2020.
This might not be the nail in yhe coffin, but it's not promising.

I don't think it's heading that way. Kamala Harris and Bernie seem like the most likely candidates because they will certainly get votes. Personally I'm rooting for Warren but that's neither here nor there. Once people start to realize that Mr. Biden isn't going to be Obama 2.0, and win before the first vote is even cast, they'll stop throwing so much weight behind him.
Re McConnell fracturing his shoulder: Why couldn't it have been his leg? It would've been more humiliating for him, since it would force him to use crutches or a wheelchair to move around (especially the former in, say, the Senate chamber, since it has a lot of stairs).
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Don't be ridiculous, Trump isn't going to win in a landslide against anyone.
I get that we rightly dislike Biden but let's not confuse our views with the views of the American public, Biden is a bad candidate for a number of reasons but giving Trump an easy victory is not one of them.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang
Is this the moment where we point out yet again that even his last victory was a) extremely close and b) due to electoral shenanigans?
And that was before he had the power to screw everyone over - four years of Trump have likely soured a lot of people on the idea of an encore.

I hope you speak from better experiences with the voting population than I've had.

Seriously, I can't remember if I ever found a knock knock joke genuinely funny or just groan-worthy like a bad pun.
Disgusted, but not surprised
