Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There's been another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
Mayor Pete said it best:
“America is under attack from homegrown white nationalist terrorism,” he said. “White nationalism is evil. And it is inspiring people to commit murder, and it is being condoned at the highest levels of the American government, and that has to end.”
When asked if he believes Trump is a white nationalist, Buttigieg said the president “at best condones and encourages white nationalism.
“It’s flourished under his watch,” he said. “This isn’t an accident.”
Buttigieg also stressed the need for stricter gun control laws across the country.

And even worse - he was killed within a minute of opening fire
, but still managed to kill 9 people and injure another 26. Someone mentioned suicide bombings, car attacks, and knife attacks earlier. The key difference between those and a shooting is how many can be killed in a short amount of time - no way can a knife-wielder kill 9 people and injure another 26 in the span of just 60 seconds, a car attacker would likely have the car be irreparably damaged before doing that kind of damage, and a suicide bomber would require the materials and know-how to pull it off. A gun? Literally just point-and-shoot.

I blame the President's rhetoric fully for the state of things. Obviously bad shit happens under every president, but I can't remember the last time a POTUS was so apathetic towards actual issues, while also propping up racist, sexist behavior which in turn fuels these attacks.
2 mass killings hours after the other, in separate states miles apart. I'd suspect a conspiracy but it's almost a certainty that one led to the other. I'm sure somewhere, some monster is happy that so many innocent lives are being snuffed out for no reason.
The argument that "We don't need gun control because someone can kill people any other way" has always infuriated me. Yeah, absolutely someone could use a car, or a knife or a bomb but there's a reason they use guns: Quick, reliable, accurate. Barely any need to plan, and you can cause all kinds of destruction in a matter of minutes. I'm so tired of this.

Just Having FunThis is beyond ridiculous at this point. We can't even get through 24 hours without a spree.
And Trump did offer a Twitter response to the El Paso shooting. Guess what it was? Thoughts and prayers. How about some action? And while you're at it, how about not riling up lunatics at your rallies?

Now watch Trump escalate the already strained relations with Mexico because he refuses to show "weakness" against brown-skinned foreigners.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. When another mass shooting happens, I just feel resigned to the fact that it was allowed to happen.
There are several contributing factors to shootings, such as mental health, acknowledgement of which is lacking in our culture; the lack of access to health care for most people compounds this issue.
I wish that someone prominent would say, "Follow the money", because the NRA isn't about loving America and the Constitution; it's about the almighty dollar, the true religion of most conservatives. It's about a few Americans selling out their fellows because they like money and it makes them feel powerful.
Do not obey in advance.I admit that it's not clear to me what money has to do with mass shootings, other than by virtue of the fact that the NRA is considered to be the most powerful lobby in the US.

In Kentucky, I mentioned 30 miles away, we had a guy go on a shooting of a black church. They'd already left so he just shot two people in his Kroger. Generally, people who get killed by guns in Kentucky are because of crime but the government classifying their hate crimes as something else.
But maybe I protest too much.
UP MY STREET, a angry white man took his wife and child hostage and tried to kill them and then himself before the Ashland SWAT killed him. This was like 2-3 years ago.
