The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That can happen even if you get a relatively progressive candidate in the WH. Obama was a progressive, according to people in this thread.

Besides, I don't think the people who support Biden expect much more from him than stopping the worst of Trump's garbage.

[up]The key is the difference between expectations and reality. Even if the progressive one objectively accomplishes more, they will inevitably cause greater disappointment if they don't accomplish everything they promised they would do.

Personally, I was rather satisfied with Obama's accomplishments as POTUS. That's partly because I never really bought too much into his whole "Yes we can" hype.

I expected him to close Guantanamo Bay and roll back some of the authoritarian Presidential powers that his predecessor had.

I just expected the health insurance thing, since that was pretty much one of his biggest priorities. It was the one thing he refused to give up on.

His failure to crack down on the big bankers and throw people in jail helped set a bad example. He could have also closed gitmo.

And what do we expect Biden to do, aside from restoring some semblance of normalcy?

For a lot of people, that might be enough. A lot of Americans just want things to feel normal and sane again.

Aye.

Also, a lot of Democrats want a moderate candidate because the arch progressives that dominate this thread are far from representative of what the actual primary voter looks like.

[up][up]And a great many do not. I don't think "our side" will achieve a lasting victory by simply getting things back to normal again, assuming that is even possible.

I think you might be mistaking me for someone who actually wants Biden to be the candidate.

I don't.

I'm just explaining why Biden has supporters.

Biden also enjoys support because he's got a record of supporting unions and blue-collar workers. That's why a lot of Sanders' supporters' second choice is Biden.

Speaking of Sanders, I've been wondering if some of the reasons why Sanders had problems back in 2016 with African-American voters - namely the perception that he is aiming for pies in the sky without either the money to pay for them or the political support to get them enacted - might be hurting Biden's competition this time round; one could make the same two concerns about many progressive policies as well.

The African-American community is pretty conservative, they just vote democrat because they damn well know the republicans will actively try to hurt them. That does not mean they particularily want a super-progressive democrat, they just want "Not the Republicans".

A lot of minority communities in the USA lean conservative. Especially older Asian people. We don't tend to get much attention whenever people talk about race stuff in the USA though. Probably because % wise there still aren't that many of us in the USA. Still kind of annoying though.

Well unfortunately, the black community voting for Republicans ala Candace Owens has been growing during the last years.

You got statistics backing that up? Because while there have always been some black Republican voters — they aren't a monolith after all — most of them recognize that the GOP is not acting in their best interests.

Just because Biden's leading NOW Doesn't mean he'll lead when the time comes. He's a centrist white man pushing the strategy that has failed to work for 30 years. He has no real chance of victory

Ahem.

He's a (1) centrist (2) white (3) man....

You underestimate how attractive these three qualities are to voters concerned about "electability".
