Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Okay so. Award for "most pre-prepared barb” goes to... Still Gillibrand for randomly saying the first thing she would do in the Oval Office is bleach everything.
But Harris talking about Biden running for president "this time" awkwardly and pointedly is a close second.
Oh, he's incredibly flawed. But credit where it's due, he's killing it when no one expects anything from him.

Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Y'know, I used to think that this primary would be a clown car (case in point, Williamson - though I still think Gabbard is worse). Now I'm not so sure, because even people like Yang and Williamson are managing to say intelligent things when they manage to differentiate their mouths from their asses. Is it possible that the primary will turn out to be a healthy one that actually builds up the winner?
Nope. Sadly.
Also, I want to say something about electability: In 2012, the Republicans went for the most "electable" candidate they could get. Obama promptly turned him into the Etch-a-Sketch meme because he had absolutely no principles and couldn't bring anything to the table.
I wouldn't want to see Trump turn that on Biden. Trump is no Obama, but he does know how to work a crowd and build memes.

Joe Biden: math failer.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Booker did very well for himself, Castro did pretty okay. Yang outperformed my expectations after last time.
Gabbard got in some solid hits against Harris, and Inslee did very well on climate change, but outside those two topics they were not all that notable.
De Blasio was...De Blasio.
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris probably lost, they both stumbled at times and took heat from many of the other candidates.
Though, what Biden said to Harris at the beginning that was hard to hear was "Go easy on me, kid." Which is...super duper yikes. She's a grown woman, Biden, and being patronizing to a woman of color like that is just...
Also, at the end of both nights I can say that LGBTQ Americans were barely referenced, and the struggles and attacks that have been happening went unmentioned. I guess, to borrow M84's brilliant phrase, I'm disgusted but not surprised.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI kind of expected Biden to do worse tbh, given how he's the main candidate to beat.
Not too surprised that Harris wasn't too great when it was her turn to play defense.
I'm kind of wishing that Gillibrand and Castro had better chances.

Disgusted, but not surprisedAlso, this was a minor thing, but I appreciated that after yesterday's showing of Steve Bullock discussing and supporting a nuclear first strike policy, that Gabbard took the time to explain just how apocalyptic nuclear war would be. I'm still not supporting her, and will not if at all possible, but was pleasantly surprised all the same.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerWarren took third place a while ago, right now she’s been in a fierce fifths for second, according to polling averages Bernie, Warren and Harris are all very close, with Bernie and Warren being a tiny bit ahead of Harris.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranBack in 2015 Jeb Bush led initial polls for the republican nomination. We all know how THAT ended.
Also while I don't like Gabbard she was dead on about Harris.

They're doing new dna testing on that particular case. If it comes out clearing the guy Kamela's fucked.

In 2016 all of the Republican primary debates all of the candidates ignored Trump even though he was leading in the polls at the time; they sort of assumed he would fall apart. Given that context, I have no problem with Harris not trying to have history repeat itself and focus on taking down Biden.
I find it useful to remember Lincoln's explanation of why he didn't get rid of Grant during the Civil War; "I can't spare this man; he fights". We can't spare Harris as a candidate; she fights. (She's not the only one, obviously.)
