Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Though I forget precisely how the nights are arranged, my hope is this:
Bernie and Warren, please team up and knock off the low-pollers on your side. This field needs to winnow already and they've got a fair number of easy targets on their half.
As for Biden and Harris 2.0, I really hope she knocks him down again. He'll be better prepared this time, but she should be able to corner him on a number of issues.
Assuming he doesn't point out how she walked back on the issue she gave him shit for in the last debate. But he probably won't.
I don't think Warren and Sanders are going to team up against the others. They'll likely spend more time sniping at each other and play progressive one-upmanship.

Disgusted, but not surprisedBiden also has to worry about Booker. Harris saved her criticism of Biden for the debate, where it had the advantage of shock value with her own personal story. Booker has been consistently critical of Biden since before the first debate. And this is Booker's make it or break it moment if he wants to ensure a place at the third debate.
The first debate was a wake up call for Biden. He'd been on cruise control up until then when Harris caught up and rammed him off the road. Now he's stopped acting like he's already in the general and has been more frequently dishing it out with Harris and Booker. He's been having mock debates to practice this time, so I suspect a repeat of last month won't be as easy.
His voters, on the other hand, are halfway there. A while back, one of his voters was interviewed on the news about the whole Russia thing saying something to the effect of "If Jesus told me that Trump colluded with Russia, I would say, 'I'm sorry, but I would have to confer that with the President.'"
i'm tired, my friendSpeaking of: CNN’s Don Lemon Confronts Pastor Over Trump Meeting: ‘Why Should Anyone Take You Seriously?
“I find President Trump leader of all colors. He attacks who he will. He’s his own man. I can’t dictate what he should or shouldn’t do. But he does not just attack black people. He attacks anybody, and you know it,” Owens replied.
“So as a man of faith, as a Christian you’re saying he attacks anyone. It sounds like you’re condoning attacks? Is that Christianly or Godly?” Lemon asked.
“I’m just stating a statement of fact,” Owens said. “I’m not condoning anything. I’m stating a statement of fact. President Trump does not pick the people he attacks because of color. He attacks anybody he feels needs it.”
“And is that okay with you?” Lemon pressed.
“Well I’m not his judge,” Owens said.
Side note: I love how people interviewed on these shows can never give a straight answer, they always either A) Deflect, or B) Engage in what-about-ism, or C) Engage in Obfuscating Stupidity. I know this isn't a new phenomenon but it's really amped up under the Trump White House.

Pastor.
"The important difference between Al-Quaeda and many Evangelical Christian groups is that the former get their own hands dirty" is a line I give to a fictional character, sometimes I wonder whether it also says something about Real Life.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMitch McConnell lashes out at the media on Senate floor about 'Moscow Mitch' accusation.
Hilarious given the Republican tendency for paranoia about communism and the fact that they're the ones who instigated McCarthyism.
To be fair, "Monstrous Mitch" or "Monster Mitch" would be a bit more accurate seeing as any Russian connections would be very far from the worst thing Evil Turtle has done.

That was Don Blankenship, coal CEO and the Faceless Senator's rival in Kentucky a year or so back. Frankly, I would have voted for the former even if his safety records were shit. Because then it would be easier to wrestle control from the latter in that state.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.I think that Booker should go up against Bernie at some point. Everyone harps on how Bernie was marching in the civil rights movement, but Booker was right up there with MLK. It’s ridiculous that they worship this old white man with a questionable racial history and trash Booker like he didn’t do shit.

Debates start tomorrow. What's everyone looking forward to? Any predictions? Advice the candidates should take to heart?
