The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well Trump has a history of working with criminal syndicates, dictatorships, and housing scams. This is all public knowledge. There's also the fact that his empire is built on not paying workers, cheating his business partners, and covering up his failures.

Plus he's probably never paid his actual taxes.

@fighteer: its a Morton's Fork; dems don't impeach, clearly their complicit in Trumps deeds. Dems try and fail to impeach, they're useless incompetents who can't do anything right.

> Is it better to try and fail or not to try at all? Which looks worse?

Failure sucks but you can learn from your mistakes after much soul searching,it happens to everyone, you make a poor roll of the dice and fail a will save or something

Not trying or do anything too approach the problem is cowardly if you know it can be done, but if you know it will result in failure its better not waste efforts on something

@Alban: Dems can try and pin it on the Rs, and they'll be right, but ultimately public opinion will depend on how the media reports it.

Or spins it.

Just to hopefully avoid us falling afoul of the ban on discussing the merits of impeachment vs the news of it:

Pelosi rebuffs Nadler on impeachment after Mueller flop
The two senior Democrats discussed the party's next steps in a closed-door caucus meeting after the special counsel's testimony.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/07/24/pelosi-nadler-rebuff-impeachment-mueller-hearing-1432925

The first portion of the article:

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler pushed to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting Wednesday, only to be rebuffed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to four sources familiar with the discussions.

At a caucus meeting following the hotly anticipated testimony of special counsel Robert Mueller, Nadler suggested that several House committee chairs could begin drafting articles of impeachment against Trump. Pelosi called the idea premature, said the sources.

Mueller's appearance was a disappointment to many Democrats, as the former FBI director stumbled at times, even seeming unsure of the contents of his 448-page report on Russian election interference and Trump's efforts to obstruct the investigation.

Pelosi convened the Democratic caucus following Mueller's appearance before the Judiciary and Intelligence panels. A lengthy, animated discussion about the impeachment process followed.

Sources said rank-and-file lawmakers asked about the technical aspects of an impeachment inquiry, including whether it would require a full vote of the House or could be initiated by the Judiciary Committee.

Nadler indicated that the committee could launch proceedings on its own. Articles filed by Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) at the outset of this Congress have already been referred to the panel, giving Democrats a vehicle to begin the hugely controversial proceedings. The technical discussion also included a question about how an impeachment case is presented to the Senate.

In the course of the wide-ranging discussion, Nadler countered Pelosi's pushback by noting that polls showed limited support for removing President Richard Nixon from office when the House began impeachment hearings in 1973, but that public support for the effort grew as more evidence came out about Nixon's illegal behavior.

As she has for months, Pelosi argued to her colleagues that the "slow, methodical approach" employed by House Democrats was the right way to move forward, despite the fact that more than 90 of her members have called for an impeachment inquiry to begin now.

Rep. Lori Trahan of Massachusetts became the latest Democrat to endorse the idea on Wednesday, but some pro-impeachment members had hoped for far more lawmakers to join them.

Pelosi also noted Democrats have several lawsuits moving forward in federal court, including cases involving Trump's personal finances and tax returns, said the sources.

Pelosi has insisted Democrats need support from Republicans, or a shift in public sentiment, before even starting an impeachment inquiry against Trump.

A GOP-run Senate is not going to vote to remove Trump from office, at least for now, so Pelosi and other senior Democrats have argued that impeachment is an empty gesture that will only cause a backlash against vulnerable Democrats in 2020.

About what I expected. Pelosi likely has always suspected that the report wouldn't be the smoking gun everyone built it up to be.

Not if they clearly pin not impeaching on the Republicans who won't do the obvious right thing.

That's harder to do if the Republicans aren't given the chance to not do the obvious right thing in the first place.

It's difficult to make the argument that Republicans are putting party over country when the opportunity to put country over party is never handed to them. We all know what the Republicans would do. But we're saving them the PR hit of actually doing it.

We shouldn't be taking bullets for Mitch McConnell.

In this case even if the Repubs take the bullet the Dems are still gonna get some flak to the face in the form of a bunch of people whose knowledge of politics only extends as far as what's said on TV blaming them for being ineffectual. Y'know, much of the same crowd that falls for bothsiderism, or believed all the hype around Mueller and the report.

Unfortunately, the Republicans have enough HP and critically low amounts of fucks to give to be able to tank a bullet or two, whereas the Dems are in a bit of a fragile state and have to avoid taking unnecessary damage.

Expect to see a lot of brazenness now that Trump feels vindicated by yesterday's dismal hearing.

@sgamer: Pelosi's move sounds in line with what I've heard from CNN: if Mueller says he can't determine whether the President committed a crime, the democrats won't convince anyone of it either. As for Omar, dogwhistles everywhere basically, already mentioned by M84.

Not if they clearly pin not impeaching on the Republicans who won't do the obvious right thing.

Which is becoming increasingly unlikely considering the failure of the hearing.

If such a thing was plausible then we would've seen something like it when Mueller gave his testimony, but it didn't happen. Quite the opposite.

What we got was a hesitant and weak testimony that coupled with Republican conspiracy theories just muddied the waters. This is a look at what would happen if we tried to impeach Donald Trump, it's no way worth the risk.

One thing,if it was (it's not but let it is) attempt bumping him off they failed, and a failed attempt could reveal the perpetrator, and give they've started authorising the Federal death penalty after a long period it should be immediately obvious who would want him dead, but of course projection is already on going
