Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Given what Trump is, I'd advocate a more personalized sentence consisting of public humiliation (the means of which would involve branding him as not as rich as he claims to be, even if only slightly), but I've no reason to believe such a punishment is within the bounds of the law.

Is this GOP posturing or actually concerning?
Vox has an article about the hearing that I think sums it up rather well, 5 losers and 0 winners from Robert Mueller’s testimony to the House of Representatives
It lays out the major figures who have lost from this and frankly it's almost hilarious how many of them there are, this terribleness was shockingly equal opportunity.
To list out the losers-
Robert Mueller: The article covers how he has been mythologized to frankly absurd levels, and how that has all come crashing down after the hearing where he not only failed to provide a silver bullet but gave a very weak showing overall. Essentially the article uses the same arguments that several people here have made.
The House of Representatives: The Democrats seem to have mismanaged the hearing rather significantly, their questions were not very compelling and they failed to account for Mueller failing to properly handle the Republican's strategy of shouting nonsense.
Impeachment: Mueller's utter nonstarter as a witness deeply undercurrents the argument in favor of impeachment, if it's supposed to lay out the crimes of the Trump administration and convince the public then this hearing has shown a dark alternative. Confused witnesses, muddied waters, and poor planning are not the kind of things that lead to the kind of benefit that pro-impeachment arguments posit.
President Trump: Mueller clearly stating that Trump could be charged after he leaves offices is rather important, if a hostile Justice Department decides to bring up charges against him then he could very well be indicted in the future. Which suffice to say, is not a good thing for Trump.

The right-wing is going to be even more insufferable for a while, at least until the reality of how terrible 45 is crashes on them again.

Agreed, this is why I consider the hearing to be a net gain.
There was never any chance of impeachment being viable so the only real change is that we now know that Trump could be indicted by a Democratic Do J which is lovely.

Civil forfeiture?
Edit: 2/10 topper. I was responding to someone suggesting Trump might have to face civil forfeiture as a result of his crimes.
