Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

As a Republican, my thinking is that they figured that he wanted the progressive women to try to fix their cities' problems instead of the problems of the nation at large. That being said, I'm absolutely sick and fucking tired of Trump trying to pick fights for no reason other than political drama.
The legend has returned.
x4 Certainly, they have their respective districts, but they were elected to represent those districts on a federal level, which means that the nation at large is still their responsibility. They vote on policies that affect everyone, after all.
But yeah, I don’t think that’s what he meant either.

Oh God! Natural light! Also, as president of the Unites States, their cities and constituents are his cities and constituents too. While I wouldn't put it past Trump to think minority majority urban areas aren't "his people," the fact is they are, and too attack those places for whatever reasons means he's not doing his job to help them.
Trump literally said "country".
....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....
....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!
He was not insinuating that the four Congresswomen should return to their country of origin; he was explicitly stating it.
Now, to be fair, all four Congresswomen are citizens of a country whose government is a complete and total catastrophe.

Ah, I see. I was somewhat misinformed as to what his actual comment was, then.
Yeah, not much room for ambiguity there.
Oh God! Natural light! There's literally been several conspiracy plans by MAGA obsessed people to kill Congressmen and women (as well as Hillary).
The only saving grace being these people are idiots and usually post their plans on the internet.

Ilhan Omar has been the punching bag, morso than even AOC, for a while now. She's Muslim, she's an immigrant, and she's on the Left. Now Trump is going full "Would someone rid me of this meddlesome Congresswoman"note at this point. Besides the horrifying racist invective, yeah, this is essentially him goading the crowd until someone attacks.
Unfortunately, as we learned at Christchurch the internet isn't always monitored, especially not where the far-Right lurks. We'll have to hope she stays safe.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI know there are conspiracy theories that Bill Clinton is an illegitimate Rockefeller(his actual biological father was kind of sketchy). Have there been previous presidents who had accusations thrown they were the bastard of some prior politician or something lower? I know the Adams made insulting statements about their rival's parentage, but besides that?
Gore Vidal's Burr had Martin Van Buren being Aaron Burr's illegitimate child, but I don't know if that's entirely his invention or it was a theory/rumor prior. I wouldn't put it past John Quincy Adams to say so, the Adams presidents were damn snarky
Carried over from the Race thread, there's discussion of "Elecability" among Progressives vs. Moderates in the Democrats:
Living in a very Red State, I think I can provide some insight into this issue better than some people. Bluntly, we do have plenty of Blue Politicians who tend to get elected. My neighboring state is run by Joe Manchin (Democrat) and the D-Senator candidate from last election (Alison Crimes) was defeated in an election to outseat Mitch Mc Connell despite the fact she's very popular while Mitch is hated.
However, Manchin is not beloved by the Left by any stretch of the imagination and with good reason because his "electability" came at the expense of the actual issues that matter.

The point stands that it's very much an uphill battle for a progressive candidate to win an election in races that heavily lean Red. Though not necessarily impossible.
I'm of the opinion that it's worth trying. If only to make complacent Republicans nervous in their "safe" seats.

Disgusted, but not surprised
