Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I say most because maybe some of them can be reached.
But usually it's a choice.
Indeed, though like most political discussions with ideologues what matters is not convincing them but rather convincing the apathetic/uninformed moderates who have yet to be swayed to one side or another.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangTrump's Nationwide Immigration Raids Fail to Materialize – Rumors of mass raids swirled, leading many immigrants to stay inside their homes. Immigrant advocates in several cities took to the streets to demonstrate.
https://www.npr.org/2019/07/14/741653581/trumps-nationwide-immigration-raids-fail-to-materialize
The gist seems to be that a lot of immigrants were scared enough to not go out this weekend but few, if any, actual arrests occurred.

I also imagine how pleased Trump's supporters felt about scaring them like that. Well, maybe not the ones who are immigrants and get caught up in the raids...but fuck'em. If you vote for the Leopards Eating Faces party, you don't get to whine if a leopard tries to eat your face.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhich ICE agents almost never have.
I mean, if so, then we have a case of a misleading headline here; it's not that the raid didn't happen, but just that the immigrants were ready for it and knew how to deal with it. The focus shouldn't be 'immigrants were scared', but rather 'ICE is powerless if you know your rights and are ready for them'.
The good people at FiveThirtyEight.com have written a long piece about sexism in US elections
.
...You what. You want the people who you abused to apologise to you? Pretty sure it's supposed to be the other way around.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Evil Cannot Comprehend Good. I'm pretty sure that's the norm for reality.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.In 2016, I admittedly mostly wanted Hilary to win so that Trump would have to be denied something he wanted. This time, though, he has to go so anything resembling respectability can be restored to America. As well as providing justice for the victims of his bullying, of course.

The Guardian puts another angle on the same story:
Note: Texan Republican Will Hurd has publicly condemned Trump's comments as racist and xenophobic (Haley Byrd, CNN reporter, Twitter link
).
Republicans silent as Trump renews racist attack on congresswomen
True to provocative form, the president accused the Democrats of “spewing” “racist hatred” – precisely the offence of which he has been widely accused.
In a tweet early on Monday, the president wrote: “When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them [and] their horrible [and] disgusting actions!”
He added: “If Democrats want to unite around the foul language [and] racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular [and] unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the US.”
The tweet reflected others Trump sent late on Sunday amid the storm created by his initial demand that the unnamed congresswomen should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime[-]infested places from which they came”.
Among Republicans, few spoke up.
Justin Amash, the Michigan congressman who has left the party in protest of the Trump presidency, called the tweets “racist and disgusting”. Amash’s parents are Palestinian and Syrian. Mia Love, who lost her seat in Utah last year and is African American, told CNN: “It has to stop. I always feel like I’m not part of the ‘America First’ that he goes out and he talks about all the time.”
Commentators from the Never Trump wing of the party were swift to condemn the president. Charlie Sykes, an editor at the Bulwark website, wrote: “There was a time when GO Pers like Paul Ryan, Lindsey Graham, Nikki Haley, Jeff Flake, even Reince [Priebus] would have denounced this kind of racism. Who will speak out now? Will any elected Republican push back?”

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Republican politicians will say that Trump is sexist and racist once he's lost reelection. They'll probably also claim they knew that all along, too. Going by this guy
anyhow.
Otherwise, from that guy's Twitter:
- Democrats have plans that 'grim reaper' Mitch McConnell won't be able to block
. Seems like people are for once realizing that they can't take a Democratic Congress for granted.
- "Historic turnout in 2020 might not work out as well for Democrats as many seem to assume"
AKA more turnout does not automatically mean Democratic advantage.
No surprise, Newt Gingrich actually praised Trump for saying those disgusting things.
5th Avenue, people. "What's the big deal? It was self defense!" "He had it coming!" "The guy who he shot was not as pristine as they'd have you believe..." "He's TOTALLY trolling the media! I love it!"

x2 That's exactly what they did 2 years after Bush Jr's term; they started attacking him as an idiotic warmonger who did nothing right, even though up until he left, they claimed he was a man who could do no wrong and everything he did was justified.
This is a part of that Cultish mentality the Republican Party has been espousing since the 90's. The only question is, if Republicans start bad mouthing Trump if he loses in '20, would the Republican Voters follow this Cult, or remain loyal to their fallen hero? And, would Trump (if he somehow escapes all consequences of his past) running again in '24 (and let's face it, as long as he's alive and free, he will try to pull a Grover Cleveland) cause a collapse of the Republican Party between the Reaganistas and the Trumpeteers?
Not surprised Gingrich praised Trump's attacks; he's the one who really started the Grand Old Cult.

That's absolutely correct, thankfully Trump has had enough of an impact on the electorate I don't think that will work. Not to mention that the base won't start disliking Trump so if they too strongly attempt to retroactively repudiate him they'll likely face an attack from that direction.
So hopefully they won't get away with that.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI have to ask, how does a party sabotage itself as effectively as the GOP has till date? It's worth making notes over.
Trump just might win 2020, but it's a long, long shot from how things are going right about now.
I hold the secrets of the machine.Well, John Katko (R-NY) also condemned Trump for the tweets
. Though not all that strongly.
And in more "Fuck You, Got Mine!" news, the Trump administration is codifying a new rule regarding asylum - if you don't request it in countries you pass through, you'll be automatically denied in the US
. I can't even imagine how many desperate people will now be attempting to sail to the US on a makeshift boat only to never be heard from again - and be completely invisible because we Never Found the Body.

The male Democrat who criticised Trump's comments is also US-born to immigrant parents but, as he pointed out, he's white so Trump isn't targeting him — or any of the other white, male politicians who are in the same boat as the the four women Trump is targeting.
