The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think there has ever been a version of conservatism in the US that was completely divorced from white identity politics.

Conservatism as a social identify meshes well with other things I've read, namely how being a "white Evangelical Christian" is also largely about social identity, and less any shared religious dogma or beliefs. It's fitting as White Evangelicals are Trump's strongest supporters, yes?

I don't think there has ever been a version of conservatism in the US that was completely divorced from white identity politics.

Conservative means a lot to different people. The modern conservative party is the unholy fusion of Southern Democrats with the Nixonian Republican party, bringing the absolute worst of both to the forefront.

An (IMO) sage comment about what might happen if Trump loses in 2020.

Also, if this Twitter discussion is accurate Amy McGrath is framing her run against the Evil Turtle in terms of "Democrat Amy Mc Grath is apparently running on some kind of platform that Kentucky loves Trump she she’ll somehow work better with him than Mc Connell?"

Is this actually right?

No.

However, she's keeping her attacks squarely on Mitch McConnell who is hated.

https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/politics/2019/07/09/amy-mcgrath-seeks-makeover-pro-trump-democrat/1680960001/

Trump is not hated in Kentucky, quite the reverse. Much to my disgust. But she's measuring her attacks against Trump. Trying not to rouse his supporters while tearing down Mitch.

"If you think about why Kentuckians voted for Trump, they wanted to drain the swamp, and Trump said that he was going to do that," Mc Grath said during the announcement of her candidacy on MSNBC's Morning Joe. "Trump promised to bring back jobs. He promised to lower drug prices for so many Kentuckians. And that is very important."

She's running a pro-Trump campaign which focuses on his economic agenda which didn't happen. As Charles said, it's Kentucky so that's probably the best strategy. It also helps that the things she's praising are hardly right-wing orthodoxy and thus it's not really too gross.

Regardless, if we get a Senator from Kentucky out of it I don't really care what nice things she says about Trump.

IMO, the problem might be that some Democrats might not be convinced that the Evil Turtle is much worse than Trump.

Yes, it's not necessarily a great strategy.

But Elizabeth Grimes lost soundly (albeit did much better than expected) in the last challenge to Mitch and she's a hero to the state.

IMO, the problem might be that some Democrats might not be convinced that the Evil Turtle is much worse than Trump.

And yet Trump is highly popular in Kentucky while Mc Connel is not, even if some Kentuckian Democrats dislike it such a strategy is most likely the best path forward for her.

Otherwise, she has no chance of winning. Especially in an election year.

If she can improve Kentucky from Safe R to Likely R or possibly even Lean R it will be a very real victory in of itself.

I can see the logic. If the state likes Trump but hates McConnell then attacking the former over the latter has very high backfire potential.

Kentucky has Democratic leaders in state elections.

Our next Governor race is the Democratic Bashir family political dynasty vs. Matt Bevin.

It's just it always votes red in Presidential elections.

So apparently a guy tried attacking one of the detention facilities in Tacoma, Washington with a flaming vehicle, incendiary devices (likely Molotovs) and armed with a rifle. He was subsequently shot and killed.

This is one of those weird ones where I could see the perpetrator being from either side - Left in the mindset of "I'm burning that place down so they have no choice but to evacuate those people!" and Right because "I'm burning that place down so I can kill as many of those illegals as possible!"

There's all sorts of horrifying in that description.

  • The guy was 70.
  • A Russian died of a hunger strike in the prison.
  • They've been using the prisoners as slave labor.
  • The administrator desperately trying to defend the conditions by saying its air conditioned and has beds for everyone.

Going back to the twitter thing, the only reason it is an issue at all is that Trump refused to follow the previous precident of having a presidential twitter and a personal one, where you could block people on the personal one but no the presidential one.

Going forward for people like AOC, the answer seems the same, have a personal and a business account, allow blocking on the personal one, but not on the bushiness one.

That won't keep harassment and obscenity from AOC as well as other public figures who should be able to block it.

Which they would be able too on there private accounts, but at the end of the day the courts made the right call here, for democracy to function all voters no mater how detestable need to be able to see whats going on, and comment on it.... therefor they cant be blocked from the method of communication used by officials.

This is something that applies equally, likewise however any threats made on said official channel should be treated as official threats complete with law enforcement action.

Beyond that, free speech does actually protect when it relates to the government itself.

Sadie-Roberts Joseph, the founder of African American History Museum, found dead in the trunk of car.

Full article here. Not sure if the topic is appropriate for the thread, but it seems she was an important figure as far as African Americans are concerned, at the very least.

Also, I'm kinda annoyed at how more people are upset about the headline not using her name than the fact that a hate crime had most assuredly taken place.

I think "Founder of African-American History Museum" gets her importance well enough. That's not something just anybody does.

Well, the guy that attacked the detention center was allegedly an anarchist and/or antifascist, who the person describing him as such believed wanted to commit Suicide by Cop - so prepare for an outpouring of "THE VIOLENT LEFT!" rhetoric in the coming week.
