Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There is absolutely nothing contradictory with viewing bussing as necessary in the 60's and 70's and viewing it as unnecessary or suboptimal now.
Harris has proposed a $100 billion plan to increase minority home ownership
, so it's not like she's abandoned addressing racial inequality.
Increasingly, my view of the libertarian ideal of "gun and land where I am king" seems like code for, "I hope society falls because I assume I will Rape Pillage Burn my neighbors."
Weirdly, David Brin's The Postman (the novel) explicitly was about that assumption with the caveat of racism and sexism being the driving force of "property and guns anarchism."

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. She attacked him for opposing bussing in the 60's while palling with segregationists, I simply don't consider that to be insincere. Her current rejection of bussing has entirely different contexts.

What became of the subpoenas for the unredacted Mueller report?

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."The fact that Harris had to go that far back to find something to hit Biden with in the first place felt dirty to me.
In 2019, I'm not particularly concerned about what someone did half a century ago.
Harris walking it back proves my point; she dug it up to have ammo, not because she felt it was actually relevant.
Billionaire Tom Steyner officially announces 2020 presidential run as a Democratic candidate.
Announcement video:
Down here in Texas I would run for state office if I had enough money. I'm not sure how the state Executive works, but the state Legislature is paid very little to the point you need an outside source of money or enough savings to last you through the regular session and any possible special sessions.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."@Soban Yeah, I would. I'm not really sure if I'm qualified, but to be fair, I don't think anyone is (the paradox of human existence is that we were made to be ruled, but were not made to rule), and if anyone's gonna screw it up, why not have it be me? If I did win (which is unlikely) it would also be interesting because I'd be the first openly autistic president.
A rule that explicitly bans billionaires from running for office is not necessarily a good idea for a few reasons:
- While it is true that you kind of have to buy your way into office, it is worth noting that someone who's qualified for presidency (in so much that anyone is) to begin with probably would become rich. Getting rich is a lot easier than running a country. Though to be fair being rich doesn't mean you're qualified (especially if your wealth was basically inherited), and "rich" in this context typically means "millionaires" not "billionaires" (the wealth gap between those two is non-trivial).
- A billionaire can just fund someone else's election anyways.
- In fact, the above is arguably a more pragmatic option. Being president kind of sucks, especially if you're already a billionaire, to who most of the benefits and perks of being president are redundant or even outright burdens (having to live in the White House, for example, is actually a downside to a billionaire). Incidentally, this is arguably good evidence that either A) Trump's victory was unintentional on his part, B) Trump is an idiot, or C) both.

In simple terms:
"The people who complain loudest about free speech are usually the most offended by those who talk about the rights of others to complain about racism, homophobia, and privilege."
